This paper presents the gender pay gap in the garment, textile and footwear industry in nine developing Asian economies – Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. It finds that women earn less than men in eight of the nine countries, with the imbalance particularly sizeable in India and Pakistan. Some of the pay gap can be attributed to differences in factors such as age and education, but discrimination also appears to be a contributing determinant. Women are also more likely to be at the lower end of the wage ladder. Applying standard Mincerian wage regressions and the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method, the paper presents empirical evidence on gender wage gaps and wage premiums in the industry, and discusses measures that can help reduce gender disparities and discrimination in the sector.

This paper presents regional trends and national estimates of exports, employment, wages, productivity and working time in the garment, textile and footwear industries in developing Asia and the Pacific based on official trade statistics and national labour force survey data. It finds that the region accounts for 60 per cent (US$601 billion) of global exports of garments, textiles and footwear. The industry employs more than 40 million Asian workers. However, labour productivity and wages remain low overall, and working time is often excessive. Applying standard Mincerian wage regressions, the paper presents empirical evidence on wage premiums and gender pay gaps in the industry, and discusses policy measures that can help sustain growth through new drivers of competitiveness.

Attention to gender equality is an important issue in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. This book analyses the wage inequality and the gender pay gap in China from a temporal and spatial point of view, using the wage surveys available from 1995 to the present. Due to their rapid growth since the country's entry into a free market economy, the analysis carried out in this book seems crucial. Our study highlights that China is currently facing serious problems of gender pay discrimination. It also finds that the earnings of coastal provinces are much higher than those of interior provinces. In terms of wage inequality, figures in China are currently high. The spatial analysis of wages distribution shows that there are very different realities throughout the Chinese geography.
