Download Albert Bloch, the American Blue Rider Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
American artist Albert Bloch lived in Munich from 1909 to 1923, where he met and worked with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, the founders of the revolutionary Blue Rider group. Until now, he has hardly been mentioned in any of the major accounts of the group. This text examines Bloch's complete oeuvre, including six paintings he contributed to the first Blue Rider exhibition, with illustrations of all his key works. An extensive anthology includes his correspondence with Kandinsky, Marc and other well-known contemporaries, as well as the texts of the lectures he gave after he returned to America in 1923 to teach. These include the "Denver Lecture", in which he provides a unique perspective of the times and talents of the Blue Rider artists. To preserve the literary style and integrity of Bloch's writings, these are reprinted in either the English or German language in which they were originally written.

Download Carmel-by-the-Sea Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A local poet once described Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its haunting pines, fog, and white sand, as our inevitable place. The area had been inhabited for more than 3,000 years when Fr. Junipero Serra chose the site for his mission headquarters in 1771. The romantic name, Carmel-by-the-Sea, was the gift of a group of women real estate developers, later used in advertising lots for brain workers at in-door employment. Many Stanford and UC Berkeley professors, artists, writers, and musicians left a lasting legacy here in their art and in their rejection of largescale commercial development. Although impoverished artists may no longer afford to live here, many residents and millions of sojourners still consider the lovely village packed with galleries and eateries their inevitable place.

Download Cy Twombly Gallery Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A visual celebration of one of the most renowned artists of our time, along with the extraordinary Gallery he helped to create to showcase his work American artist Cy Twombly (1928-2011) created paintings and sculptures that defied conventional classification. In his works, Twombly incorporated a wide variety of elements, from scrawls and calligraphic marks to text from poetry and mythology. Opening in 1995, the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection was designed by Renzo Piano and has become a pilgrimage destination for the artist's avid admirers. The product of close collaboration between the Menil, Twombly, and the Dia Center for the Arts, the Gallery is one of the most extraordinary representations of any single 20th-century artist. Twombly chose the art that would be featured and worked closely with the builders to create the most appropriate venue for its presentation. This sumptuous volume showcases thirty-three paintings and eleven sculptures, including an immense 13 x 52-foot painting. Featuring large-scale, close-up details of many of the works, the book looks at paint, plaster, paintings, sculptures, and the "cues" that Twombly gave in his art about this special collection. Published in association with the Twombly Foundation and the Menil Collection
