Working within a residential facility for adolescent male clients, who have been court ordered into a secure shelter setting, requires an intern to learn about the population, their environment, and the diagnoses of the clients entering the program. This paper provides a review of literature on several useful approaches to treatment including the sanctuary model, cognitive behavioral therapy, and art therapy with adolescent juveniles in a secure shelter. The literature review will also provide supporting information on how the intern not only worked with adolescent male detainees, but also how she formed therapeutic relationships with clients who only stayed very briefly within the program of the agency. The following section will then provide examples of the intern's experiences using art therapy within individual and group sessions as well as a review of directives that were most beneficial. Reproductions of various clients' artwork will be discussed with a focus on the themes that emerged. The final section of this paper shares lessons learned from this internship experience.

The juvenile justice system has gone through a transformation over the past few decades; from children being tried as adults to now focusing on rehabilitating juveniles in lieu of merely charging them with criminal acts. The present capstone will present how the following facilitators; creative art therapists, art therapists and multidisciplinary artists, conducted art interventions and programs that impact juveniles while in detention. The motivation for this capstone and reviewing how facilitators have been working within detention centers was due to an internship at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center in Lima, Pennsylvania. The history of the juvenile justice system will be outlined, and the mental health needs will be highlighted with respect to its impact on juveniles in locked or secured facilities. Finally, a critical analysis of articles that studied the arts, art therapy and creative art therapy will be discussed, concluding with a reflection on the influence that the arts and art therapy has on the juvenile population in detention.

The use of therapist-chosen directives in an art therapy group with adolescents at a Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) was explored. The therapist-chosen directives based on projective techniques were useful with the adolescents to a point. My co-therapist and I decided that a different approach might be more beneficial for the group. The new technique was designed to allow group members to choose a theme together and create art within that framework. Different approaches and theories are discussed in a literature review about how group is useful with juvenile adolescents.

Studies have shown that arts-based programming in juvenile detention settings can be an effective tool in rehabilitating and reintegrating youth who have come into contact with the juvenile justice system. Implementing a Gender-Based Arts Program for Juvenile Offenders focuses on a 2012-2013 program in Flint, Michigan and demonstrates that visual arts and poetry can be used effectively with young people in detention centers to improve self-image, increase confidence, and improve writing skills. Describing the program in detail, including the subjects addressed, the unforeseen pitfalls, and how individual lessons evolved over time, Implementing a Gender-Based Arts Program for Juvenile Offenders combines practical advice with a discussion of current literature on the use of integrating arts in juvenile correctional settings, as well as the literature identifying the need for gender-based programs, to provide guidance to juvenile justice and corrections professionals in their efforts to rehabilitate young people. About the Real-World Criminology Series More than just textbooks, the short books in the Real-World Criminology series are designed to be of interest to particular fields within criminology. Juvenile Justice and Expressive Arts: Creative Disruptions through Art Programs for and with Teens in a Correctional Institution explores art programming as a sustainable educational initiative to support incarcerated teens’ successful reintegration to society. Responding to a lack of scholarly research on juvenile offenders and the role of art as education in correctional facilities, Carol Cross presents a qualitative study that examines critical pedagogy, adolescent development, and research into the governance and policies surrounding youth at a Canadian correctional facility. Through observational and interview data, action research, and visual analysis, the reader gains an insider's perspective into the lives of teens affected by crime and violence and the potential of art education to aid in increasing their self-esteem, social and emotional wellbeing, and personal development. Visual art and written stories created by male and female juvenile offenders are woven throughout the chapters to illustrate the use of creative expression as education and therapy. Suitable for scholars and researchers in juvenile justice and corrections as well as policymakers and practitioners in the field, this book will provoke dialogue on best practices for the rehabilitation and reintegration of institutionalized children and youth.

During the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters, group and individual art therapy sessions were provided to adolescents at the Westmoreland County Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) in Greensburg, PA. This paper describes the work completed with two adolescents at the JDC who participated in both group and individual art therapy sessions, and illustrates which context was more effective with each adolescent. A literature review addresses art therapy with adolescents, and art therapy in group and individual contexts. A summary of the experience and reproductions of the artwork conclude the paper.
