This book is an attempt to give art therapy identity the front and center position it deserves. Despite efforts toward clarity, there will nevertheless remain many contradictory notions, often paradoxically existing at the same time. This is the nature of identity and of art therapy’s identity. “Art therapy” is neither a form of artist nor a form of therapist, but rather a whole new field – a separate and special profession with core values and attributes of its own that must lead to a special and separate identity. Chapter 1 is the “Introduction” to this book. In Chapter 2, “Images of Identity,” the basic groundwork is laid describing definitions of personal and professional identity and discussion of the concept of “intersectionality.” Chapter 3, “Living in the Real World,” discusses some unique problems faced by art therapists as they strive to achieve personal and professional identity and credibility. Chapter 4, “Essays on Identity by Art Therapists,” contains 22 essays by prominent art therapists who were invited to contribute their ideas. These essays can be considered different “readings” of what identity is in the art therapy field. Chapter 5, “Identity Initiative, Steps Toward a New Definition: An Action Plan,” describes a two-year process, including all segments of the art therapy community, to achieve and promulgate a shared public professional identity. Chapter 6 underscores “Conclusions” to discover some baseline information about identity for students entering graduate art therapy programs. A brief questionnaire was given to three art therapy master’s program directors to conduct this survey with their entering students in the fall 2012. An important and essential discussion of the nuances of identity by the art therapy community is a significant intention of the book. Identity and Art Therapy is primarily written for art therapists–both experienced and novice. It is for people who teach now and for those thinking about entering the field in the future.

The efficacy of using the art-based method of one-canvas process painting to promote personal and professional growth in art therapy graduate supervision was explored. Participants were art therapy graduate students (n = 30) spanning three AATA approved programs in semester-long supervision classes that all utilized the one-canvas process painting method. It was hypothesized that students using this method would show increased personal and professional growth scores on the PGIS-II and the PSIQ. A significant increase in scores was found in the area of professional growth, with a trend toward the intended direction for personal growth. This finding was further supported by positive feedback on the researcher-developed exit survey, particularly in the areas of self-reflection and promoting personal growth. The implications of these findings are that using one-canvas process painting is an effective method used in supervision of art therapy graduate students regarding professional identity, and it warrants further study regarding personal growth.

This graduate project presents Heuristic research designed to explore the role of the artist identity development of an Art Therapist within a cultural context. The Heuristic process is examined through the format of a step-by-step guide book to building a chaise lounge rocker. The construction of the rocker symbolizes a container of emotions the artist confronts while developing her artistic identity. Through journal entries, the artist analyzes how the intersections of her identity influence her creative self-expression. Questioning how she is perceived by others in the world, the artist wood-burns microaggressions and harassing statements that she has received in response to her marginalized identities. Findings indicate that the artist’s insecurity is her fundamental security as an artist, making the Imposter Syndrome a strength the artist embodies. This graduate project contributes to the Art Therapy profession by articulating the importance of the formation of a novice artist identity for the Art Therapist.
