The news media have given us potent demonstrations of the ambiguity of ostensibly truthful representations of public events. Jordana Mendelson uses this ambiguity as a framework for the study of Spanish visual culture from 1929 to 1939--a decade marked, on the one hand, by dictatorship, civil war, and Franco's rise to power and, on the other, by a surge in the production of documentaries of various types, from films and photographs to international exhibitions. Mendelson begins with an examination of El Pueblo Español, a model Spanish village featured at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. She then discusses Buñuel's and Dalí's documentary films, relating them not only to French Surrealism but also to issues of rural tradition in the formation of regional and national identities. Her highly original book concludes with a discussion of the 1937 Spanish Pavilion, where Picasso's famed painting of the Fascist bombing of a Basque town--Guernica--was exhibited along with monumental photomurals by Josep Renau. Based upon years of archival research, Mendelson's book opens a new perspective on the cultural politics of a turbulent era in modern Spain. La hegemonía del pensamiento, y sobre todo de la propaganda neoliberal, han abierto una profunda brecha entre el poder constituido y las necesidades reales de la mayoría de la población (desde los sectores populares a las clases medias urbanas) que sufre las consecuencias del ajuste sobre el ajuste, en una espiral de deterioro cuyo final no parece vislumbrarse. Las disciplinas del hábitat no son ajenas a esta crisis, y, al igual que el conjunto social, se debaten entre las urgencias laborales, los condicionamientos impuestos por la concentración de capitales y poderes decisorios y la dinámica especulativa sobre el suelo urbano y territorial, dominadas por leyes de oferta dirigida (a una demanda solvente) que imponen las modalidades de consumo, de utilización del tiempo y del espacio (es decir del desarrollo de un tipo de hábitat a su imagen y semejanza) (shoppings, barrios cerrados, Puerto Madero...). Al mismo tiempo que avanza la exclusión y la degradación de la vida ciudadana y de sus ámbitos tradicionalmente más democráticos e integradores (la calle, el espacio público...) aún en las áreas centrales. La producción de arquitectura no es en modo alguno la excepción a lo antedicho, sino que por el contrario, sus cualidades físicas concretas la convierten en una de sus expresiones más acabadas (en tanto perceptible y vivenciable cotidianamente). Los hechos urbano-arquitectónicos son expresión concreta de la vida de una comunidad, de las relaciones que ligan a sus miembros y de los valores (sociales, culturales y ambientales) predominantes en su materialización.
