Download Patterns and Anomalies Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In this excerpt from his acclaimed book Taming The Lion, highly successful trader, investor and former hedge fund manager, Richard Farleigh, reveals some of the secret investment strategies that he developed to succeed in the markets: "I have spent my professional life looking for patterns and anomalies. There are many in the markets which are useful to understand. Shares, bonds, currencies and property all offer unique challenges and opportunities. A good idea can often point to more than one type of investment. One example is that a strong economy is bullish for both stocks and property, but property may be the easier play because it has smoother cycles. Another type of pattern in the markets is that crisis situations almost always provide opportunities to those investors who can remain calm and who have kept some powder dry." Praise for Farleigh's acclaimed book, Taming the Lion: "Anyone who was able to retire at the age of 34, move to Monte Carlo and become a private investor must have made some smart investment decisions. Richard Farleigh did just that and he's sharing his secrets in this book." Money Magazine "Taming the Lion is a book about profiting from big themes. From humble beginnings in Australia, Farleigh made a fortune following powerful trends, the most effective and least stressful route to investment success. He knows how to write too." Telegraph "Overall I feel there is so much information in this book, it is probably one I will keep re-reading as I make investment decisions. I especially like the way it has reminded me that there are other asset classes to invest in other than shares and property and yet the same strategies are applicable." Investors Voice

Download Our Social World Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology inspires students to develop their sociological imaginations, to see the world and personal events from a new perspective, and to confront sociological issues on a day-to-day basis. Organized around the "Social World" model, a conceptual framework that demonstrates the relationships among individuals (the micro level); organizations, institutions, and subcultures (the meso level); and societies and global structures (the macro level), Jeanne H. Ballantine, Keith A. Roberts, and Kathleen Odell Korgen use this framework to help students develop the practice of using three levels of analysis, and to view sociology as an integrated whole, rather than a set of discrete subjects. The Seventh Edition includes new coverage of climate change, the influence of robots and artificial intelligence on workers, race relations in the Trump era, issues related to transgender identity and gender fluidity, sexual harassment in the workplace and the #MeToo movement, declining marriage rates, the impact of tracking for students at all academic achievement levels, smoking as an example of health and inequality in the US, gun violence and the student movement to control access to guns, social media, and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Download Social Security Programs and Retirement around the World Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
In developed countries, men’s labor force participation at older ages has increased in recent years, reversing a decades-long pattern of decline. Participation rates for older women have also been rising. What explains these patterns, and the differences in them across countries? The answers to these questions are pivotal as countries face fiscal and retirement security challenges posed by longer life-spans. This eighth phase of the International Social Security project, which compares the social security and retirement experiences of twelve developed countries, documents trends in participation and employment and explores reasons for the rising participation rates of older workers. The chapters use a common template for analysis, which facilitates comparison of results across countries. Using within-country natural experiments and cross-country comparisons, the researchers study the impact of improving health and education, changes in the occupation mix, the retirement incentives of social security programs, and the emergence of women in the workplace, on labor markets. The findings suggest that social security reforms and other factors such as the movement of women into the labor force have played an important role in labor force participation trends.

Download Patterns of World History Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Patterns of World History offers a distinct framework for understanding the global past through the study of origins, interactions, and adaptations. Authors Peter von Sivers, Charles A. Desnoyers, and George Stow--each specialists in their respective fields--examine the full range of human ingenuity over time and space in a comprehensive, even-handed, and critical fashion. The book helps students to see and understand patterns through: ORIGINS - INTERACTIONS - ADAPTATIONS These key features show the O-I-A framework in action: * Seeing Patterns, a list of key questions at the beginning of each chapter, focuses students on the 3-5 over-arching patterns, which are revisited, considered, and synthesized at the end of the chapter in Thinking Through Patterns. * Each chapter includes a Patterns Up Close case study that brings into sharp relief the O-I-A pattern using a specific idea or thing that has developed in human history (and helped, in turn, develop human history), like the innovation of the Chinese writing system or religious syncretism in India. Each case study clearly shows how an innovation originated either in one geographical center or independently in several different centers. It demonstrates how, as people in the centers interacted with their neighbors, the neighbors adapted to--and in many cases were transformed by--the idea, object, or event. Adaptations include the entire spectrum of human responses, ranging from outright rejection to creative borrowing and, at times, forced acceptance. * Concept Maps at the end of each chapter use compelling graphical representations of ideas and information to help students remember and relate the big patterns of the chapter.
