What does a 17 year old teenager do when faced with debts resulting from a close brush with paternity, a father who is notoriously tight with a dollar, and a girl named Lisa who just might warm up if he can raise the plane fare to follow her to Hawaii? The answer to these questions hurl a rather desperate 17 year old Jimmy Reardon, from the wrong side of the tracks in a posh Chicago suburb, on a 24 hour odessy as he tries to borrow from his "Saturday Habit" girl and his true girlfriend Lisa along with attempting a bit of a con on his employer and his employer's mother -- while along the way managing to seduce his father's mistress and get a beating from the school Hero -- a picaresque anti-hero is Jimmy Reardon, who finds himself in his search for escape. The book received rave reviews upon publication, with prose favorably compared to James Joyce and Kingsley Amis among others, and its author William Richert was feted by Enest Hemingway's wife as an heir apparent to the famous author. Mr. Richert never wrote another novel, and became a screenwriter, director and actor. AREN'T YOU EVEN GONNA KISS ME GOODBYE?, a Kirkus Library Review top choice in 1966, was made into a film by William Richert in the 80's starring River Phoenix and a superb cast topped by Ann Magnuson, Meredith Salenger, Louanne, Matthew Perry, Ione Skye and Jason Court. "As sweet as a dry Manhattan with twice the kick," wrote Shiela Benson in the LA Times.

Much domestic violence literature has called attention to the fact that women's material needs for shelter, daycare, employment, and legal protection may render them helpless to leave toxic relationships. Yet, even with the provision of these, many women remain tightly wound in their abusers' embrace. In Cupid's Knife: Women's Anger and Agency in Violent Relationships, Abby Stein draws on the gripping narratives of physically and emotionally abused women to illuminate how splitting off their own aggression undermines women's agency, making it almost impossible for them to leave violent partners. Psychology, with its focus on 'managing' men's anger in violent relationships, has had little to offer in the way of substantive critical work with women on the identification, integration and constructive use of a range of darker emotions typically labelled as antithetical to the norms for female behaviour. In this book, Abby Stein shows that although a number of psychological processes that contribute to the intractability of abusive relationships have been identified – such as trauma bonding and learned helplessness – their recognition has offered no clinical pathway out of the abyss. Stein suggests that our attention to other aspects of the internal world, the relational framework, and the cultural context in which both operate, may be more useful than current interventions in determining individual treatments that break the oft-cited 'cycle of violence'. More globally, Cupid's Knife: Women's Anger and Agency in Violent Relationships jumpstarts a provocative conversation about how female aggression can be repurposed as a catalyst for social change. It will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists, criminologists, students and the lay reader with an interest in clinical treatment, interpersonal psychoanalysis, domestic violence, gender roles, dissociation and aggression.

Poetry is all things to all people and this book is no exception. I am concerned that it could have the impact of a drone strike. Let your imagination run wild. Have fun. The title tells it all, Random Runes, New Poems and Old Elegies. I built a formidable file of poems I put together during the decade (2000-2010). It has been five years since Author House published my first poetry book titled, Songs from a Cave and Other Selected Poems (1995-1999). So, I bought a touch screen computer and an excellent printer (hp Officejet pro 8600 jet) and went to work organizing, authorizing and deputizing. What a job. I decided to randomize the individual works using Moses and Oakfords TABLES OF RANDOM PERMUTATIONS left in my library from my doctoral dissertation days at UC Berkeley (14 December 1974). There must be an easier way today. Consequently personal, political and philosophical works are scattered around by the process. There were new poems along the way such as Super Urban Man, On Salvaging a Sunken Stanchion and, not to forgotten, Beat Down at Dog Beach. Old Elegies were written for old friends who have passed away, Arnold, Bob, Harry and five or six others. They rime using the villanelle style and went over very well at the time. Give Us your Sons is topical and international. Its about the molestation of boys serving on the altar of churches. The last line is: We went back at seven for Mysteries of the Cross. Members of Poetry for Pleasure at the Rogers Senior Center in Huntington Beach, CA like, as of today, Dross Bucket and Baby Slobodans First Photograph. If you are a Bicyclist youll appreciate, Riding Around the Bear where I take you over Onyx Summit by Big Bear Lake and nudists will appreciate, Danseuse Narurel in four parts. The last sentence is: All of you, from head to toe will be slipping, sliding, gliding then move and pose au naturel to four-four time and dance the tango. Above all, have a good time experiencing Random Runes and, if you like, recommend it to your friends and family. Of course, Id appreciate it if you did. Gerald Olson
