Excerpt from The Arcana of Freemasonry AS many Brothers have requested me to publish in an enlarged and more permanent form my Lectures on the ancient sources of Masonry (some of which have appeared in The Freemason), I have felt it my duty as well as a pleasure to comply with their request, in order that it may enable every Brother who is interested in the past origin of the Craft to gain at least a superficial knowledge of its antiquity, which will be outside the present dogmas of the Order. The Freemasons have changed the history of the world. Their belief in liberty and equality for all people profoundly affected both the French Revolution and the founding of the United States, as evidenced in part by the symbols on our currency. In The Arcana of Freemasonry, first published in 1915, symbol expert and renowned author Albert Churchward traces and reveals the history of this very secret order. Churchward weaves a tale of Masonry's origins in ancient Egypt and its continuance through historyall told via Masonic symbols and symbolism. From Egyptian history and Mayan relief work through Greek mathematicians, philosophers, and metaphysicians, Churchward traces the development of the most basic symbols of Freemasonry. He also reveals the hidden symbolism found in the signs and tools of modern Freemasonry and helps readers find hidden meanings in all areas of liferom art and architecture to geometry and poetry. With current novels and movies leaning heavily on Masonic mysteries as plot devices, readers will be especially interested in the more arcane symbols and the stories they tell. This book contains more than 100 illustrations of Masonic symbols, from earliest recorded to those used today.

Egyptian hieroglyphics, Mayan carvings, and Greek mathematical notations figure prominently in this spellbinding true story of a mysterious order's secret history. Author Albert Churchward, a renowned symbologist and member of "the Craft," offers illustrated explanations of the meanings behind Masonic symbols. Churchward reveals Masonic messages hidden--in plain sight--within works of art, architecture, geometry, and literature.First published in 1915, The Arcana of Freemasonry examines still-relevant issues regarding the fraternal society's purpose and function in today's world. Generously illustrated with Masonic symbols, it explores the significance of the signs and tools of contemporary Freemasonry, including the two triangles--one upright, one reverse--that form the oft-seen square and compasses known as the "Key of Hiram." Initiates and experts alike will find this history both captivating and informative.

This superb investigation explains the myriad connections between ancient signs and symbols of Egypt, Mesoamerica, and the Near East with freemasonry. As a scholar of antiquity and a freemason, Albert Churchward sought to identify and explain the significance of the various insignia and motifs used by Masonic lodges. His investigations into civilizations of old uncovered a great many connections between the various signs displayed by Masons in the lodges and those drawn by ancient scribes and literati, and built by ancient stonemasons, crafters and bricklayers. Even items of dress worn during ceremonial events such as inductions to the order are identified as having resemblance to attire worn in ancient Egypt. So numerous are the resemblances, that the author takes to narrating the very origins of Freemasonry, explaining how early Masons took inspiration from the ancients. Towards the end of this narration, we find numerous shapes and patterns commonly used in the design of ancient temples, burial sites and other buildings, and the decorative elements of larger Masonic lodges. In all, Churchward's enquiry uncovers the origins of many obscure and arcane aspects of Freemasonic tradition, laying bare much for the interested reader.
