From the bestselling, Booker Prize-winning author of The White Tiger and Amnesty, a “ferociously brilliant” (Slate) novel about two brothers coming of age in a Mumbai slum, raised by their crazy, obsessive father to be cricket champions. *A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES * AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR * A NEW YORK TIMES and WASHINGTON POST NOTABLE BOOK Manjunath Kumar is fourteen and living in a slum in Mumbai. He knows he is good at cricket—if not as good as his older brother, Radha. He knows that he fears and resents his domineering and cricket-obsessed father, admires his brilliantly talented sibling, and is fascinated by curious scientific facts and the world of CSI. But there are many things, about himself and about the world, that he doesn’t know. Sometimes it even seems as though everyone has a clear idea of who Manju should be, except Manju himself. When Manju meets Radha’s great rival, a mysterious Muslim boy privileged and confident in all the ways Manju is not, everything in Manju’s world begins to change, and he is faced by decisions that will challenge his sense of self and of the world around him. Filled with unforgettable characters from across India’s social strata—the old scout everyone calls Tommy Sir; Anand Mehta, the big-dreaming investor; Sofia, a wealthy, beautiful girl and the boys’ biggest fan—Selection Day “brings a family, a city, and an entire country to scabrous and antic life” (Chicago Tribune).

Can good governance be exported? International development assistance is more frequently being applied to strengthening governance in developing countries, and in Exporting Good Governance: Temptations and Challenges in Canada’s Aid Program, the editors bring together diverse perspectives to investigate whether aid for good governance works. The first section of the book outlines the changing face of international development assistance and ideas of good governance. The second section analyzes six nations: three are countries to which Canada has devoted a significant portion of its aid efforts over the past five to ten years: Ghana, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. Two are newer and more complex “fragile states,” where Canada has engaged: Haiti and Afghanistan. These five are then compared with Mauritius, which has enjoyed relatively good governance. The final section looks at challenges and new directions for Canadas development policy. Co-published with the Centre for International Governance Innovation

This textbook methodically helps students to assimilate, articulate, and expand their knowledge and understanding of ethics, accountability, and integrity in public governance and service. The text is supported by illustrations, highlights of recent research and studies, and examples created out of the participant–observant experiences of the author as a public servant. In order to supplement the explanations and discussions, Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude in Governance closely follows a ‘consilience’ approach to topics wherein facts are intricately linked to the theories across relevant disciplines. This approach will help students to trace the evolution of concepts such as ethics, good governance and others, and assess their application in the real world. The book will prove to be an indispensable companion for students and practitioners of public administration in developing a holistic understanding of the challenges of public service in democratic nations like India. It is supported by illustrations, highlights of recent research and studies, and examples created out of the participant–observant experiences of the author as a public servant. Key Features: Integrated with a comprehensive coverage of both theoretical aspects and real-world applications of ethical practices in governance Logically sequenced into seven sections that discuss ethics and human values, ethics and public service, probity in governance, challenges of effective governance, corporate governance, ethical issues in international relations and public funding, and emotional intelligence and aptitude. Includes Chapter-end review exercise for practice and book-end case studies with answer cues to demonstrate how case studies should be studied and interpreted

With the growing recognition that many organic reactions may be conducted easily in the solid state and that organic solids may have unique optical/electronic properties, there has been much interest - in both academia and industry - in the subject of organic solid state chemistry. This book provides, for the first time, a coherent, unified view of the subject. It describes the packing of molecular crystals and how this packing influences chemical reactions in the solid state. It is concerned with various means of studying the chemistry and physics of molecules in constrained environments. Both experimental and theoretical approaches are discussed. Finally, it tackles the question of prediction of crystal packing, or crystal engineering'. The strength of the book lies in the twin approach adopted, namely that both conceptual and comprehensive chapters are present, in almost equal numbers.
