The second contribution is a requirements investigation - to evaluate whether taking advantage of the domain knowledge can result in a context-aware application that manages consumable resources efficiently. We extracted domain knowledge from informal political conversations recordings and identified the context information for building an intelligent application to manage device resources. This thesis lays a foundation for building a context-aware resource management application for a political conversation data collection domain.

Cloud computing has become increasingly popular in recent years. The benefits of cloud platforms include ease of application deployment, a pay-as-you-go model, and the ability to scale resources up or down based on an application's workload. Today's cloud platforms are being used to host increasingly complex distributed and parallel applications. The main premise of this thesis is that application-aware resource management techniques are better suited for distributed cloud applications over a systems-level one-size-fits-all approach. In this thesis, I study the cloud-based resource management techniques with a particular emphasis on how application-aware approaches can be used to improve system resource utilization and enhance applications' performance and cost. I first study always-on interactive applications that run on transient cloud servers such as Amazon spot instances. I show that by combining techniques like nested virtualization, live migration and lazy restoration together with intelligent bidding strategies, it is feasible to provide high availability to such applications while significantly reducing cost. I next study how to improve performance of parallel data processing applications like Hadoop and Spark that run in the cloud. I argue that network I/O contention in Hadoop can impact application throughput and implement a collaborative application-aware network and task scheduler using software-defined networking. By combining flow scheduling with task scheduling, our system can effectively avoid network contention and improve Hadoop's performance. I then investigate similar issues in Spark and find that task scheduling is more important for Spark jobs. I propose a network-aware task scheduling method that can adaptively schedule tasks for different types of jobs without system tuning and improve Spark's performance significantly. Finally, I study how to deploy network functions in the cloud. Specifically, I focus on comparing different methods of chaining network functions. By carrying out empirical evaluation of two different deployment methods, we figure out the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Our results suggest that the tenant-centric placement provides lower latencies while service-centric approach is more flexible for reconfiguration and capacity scaling.

The increasing diversity of connected devices leads to new application domains being envisioned. Some of these need ultra low latency or have privacy requirements that cannot be satisfied by the current cloud. By bringing resources closer to the end user, the recent edge computing paradigm aims to enable such applications. One critical aspect to ensure the successful deployment of the edge computing paradigm is efficient resource management. Indeed, obtaining the needed resources is crucial for the applications using the edge, but the resource picture of this paradigm is complex. First, as opposed to the nearly infinite resources provided by the cloud, the edge devices have finite resources. Moreover, different resource types are required depending on the applications and the devices supplying those resources are very heterogeneous. This thesis studies several challenges towards enabling efficient resource management for edge computing. The thesis begins by a review of the state-of-the-art research focusing on resource management in the edge computing context. A taxonomy is proposed for providing an overview of the current research and identify areas in need of further work. One of the identified challenges is studying the resource supply organization in the case where a mix of mobile and stationary devices is used to provide the edge resources. The ORCH framework is proposed as a means to orchestrate this edge device mix. The evaluation performed in a simulator shows that this combination of devices enables higher quality of service for latency-critical tasks. Another area is understanding the resource demand side. The thesis presents a study of the workload of a killer application for edge computing: mixed reality. The MR-Leo prototype is designed and used as a vehicle to understand the end-to-end latency, the throughput, and the characteristics of the workload for this type of application. A method for modeling the workload of an application is devised and applied to MR-Leo in order to obtain a synthetic workload exhibiting the same characteristics, which can be used in further studies.

th We are very happy to present the proceedings of the 8 International Workshop on Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems IDMS 2001, in co-operation with ACM SIGCOMM and SIGMM. These proceedings contain the technical programme for IDMS 2001, held September 4 7, 2001 in Lancaster, UK. For the technical programme this year we received 48 research papers from both a- demic and industrial institutions all around the world. After the review process, 15 were accepted as full papers for publication, and a further 8 as short positional papers, intended to provoke debate. The technical programme was complimented by three invited papers: QoS for Multimedia What’s Going to Make It Pay? by Derek McAuley, E nabling the Internet to Provide Multimedia Services by Markus H- mann, and MPEG-21 Standard: Why an Open Multimedia Framework? by Fernando Pereira. The organisers are very grateful for the help they received to make IDMS 2001 a successful event. In particular, we would like to thank the PC for their first class - views of papers, particularly considering the tight reviewing deadlines this year.
