El estudio de la transculturalidad siempre ha constituido uno de los márgenes tradicionales en el estudio de la psicología y la psiquiatría, más propia de la curiosidad de algunos que de la ciencia mayoritaria. A la psicología y la psiquiatría les está costando décadas entender el estudio de la transculturalidad como objeto académico del que enriquecerse, no viéndolo como la excepción a conjugar sino como el núcleo desde el que debe construirse una tesis. Posiblemente sea la serie de estudios transculturales de corroboración emprendidos desde los ochenta por la Organización Mundial de la Salud los que de verdad abren el campo y plantean una serie de interrogantes muchos de los cuales aún están por contestar y atraen por fin la atención de una base amplia de profesionales. Por desgracia estos estudios, demasiado centrados en extender las perspectivas occidentales, han ido ofreciendo, por su misma naturaleza circular, resultados poco espectaculares. El presente texto plantea tres objetivos: a) Desarrollar de una manera breve y concisa un panorama del estado actual de la psicología y la psiquiatría transculturales. b) Ofrecer un acercamiento entre antropología y psicología. c) Mostrar a la psicología y la psiquiatría transculturales como auténtica raíz de la que debería nacer, inexcusablemente, un tronco científico disciplinario que pretenda ser universal.
