In Apocalypse Revealed, Swedish scientist-turned-seer Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) takes the reader verse by verse through the Book of Revelation, explaining the spiritual meaning behind the literal words of the biblical text. The first volume deals specifically with Revelation 1-13, with detailed discussions of the symbolism of each object and event described in the text. This edition is a reprint, with some revisions, of a 1928 translation by John Whitehead.

Excerpt from The Apocalypse Revealed, Vol. 1: Wherein Are Disclosed the Arcana There Foretold, Which Have Hitherto Remained Concealed Every one can see that the Apocalypse can by no means be explained but by the Lord alone; for each word therein contains arcana, which would never be known without special enlightenment, and thus reve lation: therefore, it has pleased the Lord to open the sight of my spirit, and to teach me. Do not believe, therefore, that I have taken any thing here from my self, nor from any angel, but from the Lord alone. The Lord also said to John through the angel, Seal not the words of the prophecy of this Book (chap. Xxn. Revelation: Written in Layman's Terms, Volume 1, covers chapters 1""19; however, chapters 4 and 5 deals with events in heaven. Chapters 6""19 deal with events on earth in detail, such as the significance of the seventy weeks and the beginning of the Tribulation period. In chapter 1:3, it states: "Blessed is he that 1) readeth, and they that 2) hear the words of this prophecy, and 3) keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand." The blessing of verse 3 has a threefold condition: 1) read the book, 2) hear (understand) it; and 3) keep (obey) it. The essential nature of prophecy was the communication of new truth (divine revelation). God has given it to be obeyed, not simply to be discussed and debated. The time is at hand in the sense that nothing else now has to occur before the Rapture and the beginning of the Tribulation period (1 Thess. 4:13""18), same as Rev. 4:1.
