Excerpt from Thoughts and Stories on Tobacco, for American Lads: Or Uncle Toby's Anti-Tobacco Advice to His Nephew Billy Bruce But in the name of Patriotism, in the name of Reli gion, and all which is lovely and of good report, I call on you, my dear lads, to stand clear of a habit, which turns freemen into slaves. Stand clear of a yoke, ten times more gelling than the yoke of George the Third, which your Grand-sires broke. Here is a tyrant, whose little finger is thicker than the loins of that good natured old monarch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tobacco: Its Use and Abuse "Use no tobacco unless prescribed by a physician. It is an uncleanly and unwholesome self-indulgence." - John Wesley, "But O! what witchcraft of a stronger kind, Or cause too deep for human search to find, Makes earth-born weeds imperial man enslave - Not little souls, but e'en the wise and brave." - Arbuckle's Poem on Snuff. I do not place my individual self in opposition to tobacco; but science, in the form of physiology and hygiene, is opposed to it; and science is the expression of God's will in the government of his work in the universe." - Wu lard Parker. "Having for many years made a specialty of the study of the laws of health and disease, I consider this one of the greatest evils of the present day. Language cannot describe the terrible effects which tobacco produces upon both body and mind. It perverts the taste, impairs mental capacity, corrupts the moral sense, and stimulates the animal nature." - Nathan Allen. Excerpt from The Tobacco Problem In bringing out the present edition of The Tobacco Problem, I desire to say that, while I have taken tobacco for my text, I have included all other narcotics, especially those used, at first, under medical prescription and continued until the servant becomes, not only a master, but a tyrant. I wish also to acknowledge the great kindness with which my book has been received, even by many devotees of the weed. I had hardly expected such a degree of sufferance. It is true that, out spoken as I have been, I have set down naught in malice, and have aimed to avoid unfair and nuwar ranted statements. Yet I am aware that it is well nigh impossible for one with strong convictions as to the use Of narcotics, to write a treatise on the subject which will not seem, perhaps to a large class, unreasonable and extravagant, if not absurd. Judging from the indications, the majority in Church and State are against me. Again and again have I been told that I injure the cause by demanding too much; that it is the abuse and not the proper use Of tobacco against which I should direct my efforts. Excerpt from Tobacco: Its History Dominated not one particular nation, but the whole world, both Christian and Pagan. Ushered into the Old World from the New by the great colonizers - Spain, England, and France - it attracted at once the attention of the authors of the period as a fit subject for their marvel-loving pens. It has been the aim of the writer to give as much as possible of the existing material to be had concerning the early persecution waged against it, whether by Church or State. These accounts, while they invest with additional interest its early use and introduction, serve as well to show its triumph over all its foes and its vast importance to the commerce of the world. This work has been prepared and arranged, not only for the instruction and entertainment of the users of tobac'co, but for the benefit of the cultivators and manufacturers as well. As such it is now presented to the public for whatever meed of praise or censure it is found to deserve. Hartford, conn., 1875. Excerpt from Responses on the Use of Tobacco Subject, its nature and wide-spread evils are such as to justify the publication not only of a second, but of a third and fourth volume. It is neither so pleasant, nor profitable in a pecuniary point of view, that we give it the preference to other topics. But, fully believing that mankind are suffering incalculable ills from its use, conscious of our weakness and of the power of the enemy, we have attempted their rescue. How far we shall have effected it, remains to be seen. We should rejoice to see some abler pen than ours do more ample justice to the subject. The reasons which have urged us forward to the expense and labor we have bestowed on this subject, have arisen from our personal experience of its very sad and mourn.
