Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Librarian of New Jersey for the Year 1901 I have been instructed by the Commissioners of the State Library to ask the Legislature to increase to the extent of $500 the appropria tion for incidental expenses in the Library. This sum will be suffi cient to permit a subscription for the printed catalogue cards, purchase blank cards for the work not covered by the Library of Congress, and secure a case for the catalogue. During the past summer a consider able part of the work of reclassifying the books in the Reference Library has been done by Mr. Rogers, the Reference Librarian, and it will doubtless be completed during the present year. It is pro posed to do all the work without any expense to the State beyond the amount stated. An important contribution was made in January last by the John L. Murphy Publishing Company, of Trenton, which sent. To the Library, as a special loan, a file of The State Gazette and New Jersey Advertiser from January 3d, 1797 The Federalist; or, New Jersey State Gazette, from its first issue on July 9th, 1798; and the New Jersey State Gazette, from its first issue on March 5th, 1799, to the date of the consolidation of these papers into The Federalist and New Jersey State Gazette, on July 8th, 1900 and a complete file of the last-named paper, under its various changes in name, down to December, 1889. The State already owned a file of the State Gazette from 1840. With the loan came an intimation that the papers covering the period from 1797 to 1840 would be left in the State Library permanently. These, with the valuable contributions made last year by the late John L. Murphy and by Francis B. Lee, furnish a continuous history of the State by contemporaneous writers during the nearly half a century from 17 97 to 1840. Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Librarian of New Jersey: For the Year 1899 The number of books reported, while approximately cor rect, is not really so, as there has been no inventory made for many years, and, under the system practiced Of freely loaning books to be taken from the Library, many have been lost. During the last year the Library Commissioners adopted a rule forbidding the loaning of books from the Library to be taken from the Capitol. The necessity for this was because of complaints from lawyers from various parts of the State who visited Trenton to consult books known to be in the Library, only to find that their journeys were useless because the books had been borrowed. The last printed catalogue of the books in the Library was made in 1853. In 1862 a new catalogue was prepared, but never printed. Since then the only sources of information concerning the books have been the written catalogues, kept in the Law and General Libraries, and the annual reports of the Librarians. The written catalogues soon become so defaced by corrections and interlineations as to be of little use excepting to the assistants who make the entries and changes. To make a new printed catalogue would cost several thousand dollars and consume years of time, and after it had been printed it would be inaccurate by reason of the additions made dur ing the period of time required for the printing. The card catalogue system is being adopted by libraries generally as the best method of keeping a record of the contents of a library. It consists of a series of cards containing the titles of the books and the names of their authors, arranged alphabetically. There are several schemes in operation in connection with the system, all of which have cham pions, but the simplest seems to be that known as a dictionary catalogue. To introduce the system would require the expenditure of or and a year or so Of time, the length of time depending on the number of persons engaged in the work of classifi cation and writing the cards. Excerpt from Annual Report of State Librarian: 1900 In line with progressive library work, and with a View to rendering more efficient service in my department, I have adopted the card system of cataloguing, and find it more convenient, more economical, and in every way pref erable to the usual printed catalogue required by law. This involves the saving of about $100 each year, (which would be the cost of a printed catalogue), while for utility and serviceableness the card system is incomparably superior. By this arrangement new books are catalogued as they arrive, thus showing in convenient classification the latest editions of text-books and other works of refer ence, and bringing the list right up to date. Since my last report I have collected and brought together in the Historical Room of the Library, for more convenient reference, the Colonial and Revolutionary records of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Con necticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Penn sylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina, making altogether a mass of exceedingly interesting historical matter. It will be noted that all of the original thirteen States, except South Carolina and Georgia, are represented in this collection. I am informed that South Carolina has 'a commission at work now collecting data and pre paring material for a similar publication, having only a short time since paid for a transcript of the C010 nial Records of that State on file in the British Public Records Office in London. Thus it will be seen that, of the entire colonial sisterhood, Georgia is the only State that has not either printed these valuable records, or is pre paring to do so. Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Librarian of the State of New Jersey, for the Year 1893 To the Law Department every valuable work announced has been added, and the collection is the constant theme of admiration of lead ing old lawyers of Philadelphia, New York, Jersey City, Newark and Camden, who are employed in our State and United States Courts. The Miscellaneous Department is celebrated for its varied treasures. Upon one wall is a complete set of the journals of Congress, includ ing the Globe and the Record, without a volume missing, and on another wall is a complete set of Patent Office Reports, including the Official Gazette, to date. Here the patent lawyers and their clients revel, and we call it our Patent Office. In this department we have also all the leading Encyclopedias of the world, all the standard Histories, especially of the States, all the leading works on Theology, Philosophy, Science, Travels, Art and Biography, and the tables are constantly occupied by persons hunting up their pedigrees, students of the Normal School and Business Colleges preparing for debates and other exercises, and numerous reporters ascertaining or verifying facts for public information. During the year we have been able to obtain a copy of that rare book, Carter's Ancient Architecture of England, during the Brit ish, Roman, Saxon and Norman eras, down to the time of Edward III., illustrated by one hundred and nine royal folio engravings. There has also been added to the Library a full set of Harper's Maga zine, with an index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
