Excerpt from Annual Report of the Legislative Library and Archives, 1977 If the best of the past is to be combined with the promise of the future, the Legislative Library endeavours to do this in consistently seeking to sustain and enhance its tradition of service developed during more than a century. The Library continuously strives effectively to fulfill its statutory obligation of providing reference and research services to Members of the Legislative Assembly, government departments and agencies, including special committees, task forces and commissions, in their respective functions and responsibilities. The Library also continues to extend its services, the use of its resources, and its facilities to the general public who may be in quest of vital information, notably to the academic community, authors and journalists, researchers engaged in various programs and projects, and to many citizens pursuing topics of interest relating to Manitoba and Western Canada. Drawing on its extensive collection of books, studies and reports, government publications, periodicals and newspapers, the staff in 1977 responded to reference and research queries compared to in 1976. The queries ranged from simple questions to complex problems involving research and full bibliographic documentation concerning such varied subjects as. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Legislative Library and Archives, 1974 The past is prologue and in that sense, nineteen seventy-four was a year of accelerated activity in the Legislative Library in preparation for the imminent move of the Library's collections to premises which are nearing completion in the renovated Auditorium Building, at present known as the Provincial Library and Archives Building. Since its establishment the Legislative Library has known as many changes in location as has the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. It was first housed in the William Bannatyne residence, where the first Legislative Assembly of Manitoba was held in 1871. After fire destroyed the Bannatyne residence in 1873, the Library moved to the Court House of the City of Winnipeg which was located immediately south of the present Royal Bank Building at William Avenue. From 1882 to 1920 it was accommodated in the Legislative Building located on Kennedy Street. From 1920 when the present Legislative Building was officially opened, the Legislative Library has occupied the specially designed rooms located in the south wing and stack rooms in rooms 69 and 171. In the half century intervening, expansion of the Library has demanded additional space to house the collections. In 1951 a large room known as the Writing Room adjacent to the library proper was allocated to the Library and a storage area located under the Dome was provided. The former Writing Room was shared with the Archives Branch which also required space to house its collections of manuscripts, pictures and other documentary material. As their collection grew through the years, it was necessary for the Archives to acquire some shelf space from the library areas located on the various floors of the Legislative Building with the inevitable result that library space was reduced with each passing year although its requirements were growing. In successive annual reports of the last two decades the Librarian has stressed the increasing seriousness of the critical shortage of space, both in staff working areas and in the stacks housing the collections of the Library. In the present quarters in the Legislative Building continuous expansion of the Library's activities has created an almost insurmountable obstacle to the rational and efficient organization of library materials and services. This acute lack of space has constituted the Library's greatest single impediment to providing effective service. Materials have had to be doubly or triply shelved, with the overflow stacked in the aisles making them difficult of access and adversely affecting the efficiency of the staff and the level of service the Library has been able to offer. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Librarian of Congress: For the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1973 From January 1, 1962, through June 30, 1973, the Library Of Congress Special Currency Program, known familiarly as the pl. 480 Program, acquired over million items for American libraries. Within the first six months of calendar 1973, however, the Office of Management and Budget informed the Library that excess currencies available for funding the programs in Sri Lanka, Israel, and Yugoslavia were running out. Accordingly, the Tel Aviv office was closed in May 1973 and the issue of the Accessions List: Israel, covering the month of April, was the final number in this serial of 10 years' standing. From March 1964 through May 1973 the Public Law 480 Office in Tel Aviv acquired and shipped more than million items to American research libraries, and an additional monographs and serials were distributed to the 300 participants in the English-language program between 1965 and 1969. The Library will continue to process Israeli acquisitions. To continue acquisitions of current Yugoslavian materials, the Library selected a blanket-order and subscription agent who planned significant expansion of his activities. The program in Sri Lanka was terminated on June 30, 1973, but Public Law 480 coverage was succeeded in July by a cooperative acquisitions program supported by 17 libraries - California at Berkeley, Chicago, Cornell; Duke, Harvard, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Yale Universities and the Center for Research Libraries. Participation in the program is Open to any American library prepared to contribute $500 annually for English-language publications only, $700 for English and Tamil publications, or for publications in English, Tamil, and Sinhalese. The New Delhi office will continue to issue and distribute the Accessions List: Sri Lanka. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
