Excerpt from Twenty-Fourth Annual Report of the Bureau of Statistics of Labor and Industries of New Jersey: For the Year Ending October 31st, 1901 The second section of the law under which the Bureau was organized provides that the duties of said Bureau shall be to collect, assort, systematize and present in annual reports to the Legislature statistical details relating to all departments of labor in the State, especially in its relation to the commercial, indus trial, social, educational and sanitary conditions of the working classes. The duties thus imposed upon the Bureau are of a very broad and far-reaching character, requiring for their proper perform ance a more than ordinarily searching and sustained inquiry into the principles underlying our industrial and social systems, with a view to arriving at an understanding of their relations to and bearing upon each other. In the exercise of the discretion conferred by the act which leaves the Chief of the Bureau free to select the subjects to be investigated for the purpose of carrying out its intent, I have endeavored to make this, like the reports of preceding years since my administration of the office began, helpful and interesting to all our people, and particularly so to those of them who are en gaged either as employers or workmen in mills and factories throughout the State.
