Excerpt from Annual Magazine Subject-Index, 1913: Including as Part II, the Dramatic Index, 1913 This series of Indexes was begun in 1907 by the present editor in response to a need expressed by many for an index to serials which were denied admission to any of the then existing general indexes to periodical literature. We still, as hitherto, omit fiction, except continued stories, or stories by well-known authors. We specialize in some fields, such as History, Travel, Mountaineering, Exploration, Outdoor Life, F ine Arts, and Architecture, but this index now becomes more general in scope than before. This year we index 144 titles, and owing to the suspension of Poole's Index have taken up several more of the magazines and reviews that were for merly therein included, but now, since 1910, neglected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. This ambitious undertaking is designed to acquaint students, teachers, and researchers with reference sources in any branch of English studies, which Marcuse defines as "all those subjects and lines of critical and scholarly inquiry presently pursued by members of university departments of English language and literature.'' Within each of 24 major sections, Marcuse lists and annotates bibliographies, guides, reviews of research, encyclopedias, dictionaries, journals, and reference histories. The annotations and various indexes are models of clarity and usefulness, and cross references are liberally supplied where appropriate. Although cost-conscious librarians will probably consider the several other excellent literary bibliographies in print, such as James L. Harner's Literary Research Guide (Modern Language Assn. of America, 1989), larger academic libraries will want Marcuse's volume.-- Jack Bales, Mary Washington Coll.
