The nonlinear equations of motion are solved algebraically for conditions for which an airplane is in an equilibrium spin. Constrained minimization techniques are employed in obtaining the solution. Linear characteristics of the airplane about the equilibrium points are also presented and their significance in identifying the stability characteristics of the equilibrium points is discussed. Computer time requirements are small making the method appear potentially applicable in airplane design. Results are obtained for several configurations and are compared with other analytic-numerical methods employed in spin prediction. Correlation with experimental results is discussed for one configuration for which a rather extensive data base was available. A need is indicated for higher Reynolds number data taken under conditions which more accurately simulate a spin.

Six non-linear equations of motion for a rigid body are used to model the aircraft's motion while in a spin. After applying the conditions for an equilibrium spin, the resulting six non-linear simultaneous equations are solved using a method that is accurate and well suited for use with a high-speed digital computer. The solution yields the equilibrium spin conditions and these solutions were usually obtained with less than three seconds of computer time. These results are compared with the results from previous prediction schemes. The linear characteristics of the aircraft about the equilibrium points are also presented. The model chosen for this study was a delta-wing fighter configuration.

Download Analytical Prediction of the B-58a Spin Characteristics - Phase Ii. Correlation of Analytical Model Spin Predictions with Free Flight Model Test Results Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This spin investigation is composed of freeflight model spin-entry and developed-spin tests, static and rotary force-model wind-tunnel tests to extreme angles of attack and sideslip, and an analytical program for prediction of high angle of attack motion. The second phase uses final, low Reynolds number aerodynamic data and deals with the correlation of analytical predictions of model motion with free-flight model test results. The objective is to determine the accuracy of analytical predictions of the model motions at extreme angles of attack so as to establish the level of confidence to be placed in the prediction of full-scale airplane motion. The free-flight model test program consisted of spin-entry (catapult) tests and developed-spin (spin tunnel) tests. Time histories of the motion of a 1/40-scale dynamically-similar model of the B-58A were obtained from raw test data transmitted by NASA. From comparison of analytical predictions of model motion with experimental time histories, it is concluded that analytical predictions of stall and spin-entry motion are quite adequate and valid. The developed-spin predictions are less accurate than those for spin-entry. However, they are representative of the developed-spin motion and the general levels of periods and amplitudes of the oscillations are acceptable. (Authr).
