Metal cutting processes still represent the largest class of manufacturing operations. One of the main features of any material removal process is that a significant portion of the mechanical energy generated by the interaction of the tool and the workpiece is converted into heat. The total amount of heat generated during cutting is the combination of heat of the chips, the tool, and the workpiece. This work focuses on analysis of the thermal field of the oblique machining process. Finite element method (FEM) software DEFORM 3D was used together with experimental work carried out using infrared image equipment, which include both hardware and software simulations. The results of the high precision infrared thermal measurements are compared with simulation results, considering the maximum and the mean temperatures in the tool-chip interface zone and the temperature distributions in the tool rake face. using different materials, tool obliquity, cutting speeds, feed rates and depth of cut.

The aim of the current work was the analysis of temperatures in the milling process in order to understand causal and statistical relationships between process parameters and thermal state variables. The first step included fundamental empirical investigations in the form of orthogonal cuts in order to estimate the heat partitioning depending on the process parameters. Based on the empirical data from the orthogonal cuts temperature fields in the milling process were modelled analytically and validated.

This contributed volume contains the research results of the priority programme (PP) 1480 “Modelling, Simulation and Compensation of Thermal Effects for Complex Machining Processes", funded by the German Research Society (DFG). The topical focus of this programme is the simulation-based prediction and compensation of thermally induced workpiece deviations and subsurface damage effects. The approach to the topic is genuinely interdisciplinary, covering all relevant machining operations such as turning, milling, drilling and grinding. The target audience primarily comprises research experts and practitioners in the field of production engineering, but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.

This book introduces state-of-the-art experimental and numerical methods and examples for evaluating the drilling performance of engineering and biological materials, particularly in thermal aspects. The authors use a common pathway to present the technological and analytical methods for both industry (metal) drilling and orthopaedic surgery (bone) drilling research, making this book a resource for both industrial and clinical readers who wish to understand the evolution of technologies, techniques and challenges in drilling. The authors also focus on advanced engineering materials, such as titanium alloys and high-strength cast irons, which have broad applications in the automotive, aerospace, medical device and sports industries. This book is a must-read for a broad audience, including engineering students in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses that involve machining processes; for surgery residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons; and for engineers in the medical device industry who develop new bone cutting tools. Bridges the knowledge on drilling from the manufacturing industry to healthcare; Covers the experimental and modeling aspects of drilling thermal analysis; Includes experimental studies that contain parameters and data that emulate practical production and clinical drilling.

Metal machining is the most widespread metal-shaping process in the mechanical manufacturing industry. World-wide investment in metal machining tools increases year on year - and the wealth of nations can be judged by it. This text - the most up-to-date in the field - provides in-depth discussion of the theory and application of metal machining at an advanced level. It begins with an overview of the development of metal machining and its role in the current industrial environment and continues with a discussion of the theory and practice of machining. The underlying mechanics are analysed in detail and there are extensive chapters examining applications through a discussion of simulation and process control. "Metal Machining: Theory and Applications" is essential reading for senior undergraduates and postgraduates specialising in cutting technology. It is also an invaluable reference tool for professional engineers. Professors Childs, Maekawa, Obikawa and Yamane are four of the leading authorities on metal machining and have worked together for many years. Of interest to all mechanical, manufacturing and materials engineers Theoretical and practical problems addressed

Evolving temperature distributions during metal cutting are of major significance. Present analytical models are not capable to predict temperature fields to a sufficient degree. This lack of model validity is caused by the limited mathematical approaches. The present thesis deals with the development of methodologies for thermal modeling based on a class of complex functions termed potential functions. This approach has never been used before for metal cutting applications.
