This study attempts to explore the use of body art in art therapy with adolescent boys in residential treatment to increase engagement and self-expression. This theoretical research is based on my work as an art therapy intern at a residential facility for young people in Evanston, Illinois. In my work with adolescent boys, I witnessed their natural proclivity to use their bodies as a way to express their identity: their physical posturing, clothing and accessories, body movement and gesture, as well as their use of self-adhesive tattoos and writing or drawing on their arms and hands were all a means of self-expression for them. For the purposes of this paper, body art is defined as body painting, image transfers, projected images, body casting, and body adornment. The research for this thesis includes a historical and sociocultural overview of body art, its therapeutic applications, and interviews with art therapists who have worked with adolescent males in residential treatment about their experiences and application of body art both in their personal and professional practice. Research results indicated a greater modern-day acceptance of the use of body art, a lack of art therapy literature relating to the use of body art in art therapy practice, and a need to expand the definition of body art to include various impermanent forms and material types. This thesis proposes a framework for the application of impermanent body art interventions in art therapy with adolescent males in residential treatment. The framework emphasizes: 1) the need for a clear definition of body art delineating inclusion and exclusion of specific materials and processes, 2) clear intentions and rational behind the application of body art with adolescent boys in residential treatment, and 3) an examination of the potential benefits and risks of using body art with this population in order to make informed choices regarding process and materials.

This arts-based inquiry was situated within my clinical art therapy internship at a residential treatment center for children and adolescents. This center disproportionately treats African American boys, ages 6-16, who are resilient survivors of complex trauma with a history of acute emotional and behavioral challenges, resulting in them being removed from their homes. This investigation led to a holistic view of mental health not existing in isolation from one's racial marginalization or other identity markers. All of the youth were collectively a part of a subjugated group by default of being in residential care, involved with the child welfare system, and most, having inconsistent guardianship. My personal use of creative expression was integral in the formulation of my focal question: Within a culturally competent and trauma-informed framework, how do I effectively incorporate integrated arts (visual arts, hip-hop, movement, theatre/performance and writing) and Positive Youth Development (PYD) values into my art therapy practice at a residential treatment center for children and adolescents? A review of relevant literature for each of the approaches provided the theoretical foundation for this arts-based inquiry. Over the course of six weeks, I employed an intentional method of answering a set of "Processing Questions," and creating art in response to art therapy sessions with two groups and two individual participants. This resulted in the creation of clinically sound directives and interventions that evolved from participants' interests and needs as indicated by their weekly participation and my clinical observations. My clinical techniques included: maintaining an evolving working definition of culture, and making personal artwork alongside the youth or supporting them in their own projects. In the context of Positive Youth Development, there was a balance between being authoritarian and authoritative to maintain structure and boundaries. I assert that these combined approaches facilitated healthy and meaningful client-therapist relationships, fostered hope, promoted self-discovery and helped in the process of reconciling past traumas.

Working within a residential facility for adolescent male clients, who have been court ordered into a secure shelter setting, requires an intern to learn about the population, their environment, and the diagnoses of the clients entering the program. This paper provides a review of literature on several useful approaches to treatment including the sanctuary model, cognitive behavioral therapy, and art therapy with adolescent juveniles in a secure shelter.
