Analysis and Modelling of Non-Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks deals with flows in pipes and channel networks from the standpoints of hydraulics and modelling techniques and methods. These engineering problems occur in the course of the design and construction of hydroenergy plants, water-supply and other systems. In this book, the author presents his experience in solving these problems from the early 1970s to the present day. During this period new methods of solving hydraulic problems have evolved, due to the development of computers and numerical methods. This book is accompanied by a website which hosts the author's software package, Simpip (an abbreviation of simulation of pipe flow) for solving non-steady pipe flow using the finite element method. The program also covers flows in channels. The book presents the numerical core of the SimpipCore program (written in Fortran). Key features: Presents the theory and practice of modelling different flows in hydraulic networks Takes a systematic approach and addresses the topic from the fundamentals Presents numerical solutions based on finite element analysis Accompanied by a website hosting supporting material including the SimpipCore project as a standalone program Analysis and Modelling of Non-Steady Flow in Pipe and Channel Networks is an ideal reference book for engineers, practitioners and graduate students across engineering disciplines.

This book introduces novel methods for leak and blockage detection in pipelines. The leak happens as a result of ageing pipelines or extreme pressure forced by operational error or valve rapid variation. Many factors influence blockage formation in pipes like wax deposition that leads to the formation and eventual growth of solid layers and deposition of suspended solid particles in the fluids. In this book, initially, different categories of leak detection are overviewed. Afterwards, the observability and controllability of pipeline systems are analysed. Control variables can be usually presented by pressure and flow rates at the start and end points of the pipe. Different cases are considered based on the selection of control variables to model the system. Several theorems are presented to test the observability and controllability of the system. In this book, the leakage flow in the pipelines is studied numerically to find the relationship between leakage flow and pressure difference. Removing leakage completely is almost impossible; hence, the development of a formal systematic leakage control policy is the most reliable approach to reducing leakage rates.

The protection of the irrigation pipeline networks against Water Hammer -as a result of pump power failure- is of great importance. In this study, an improved design for irrigation pipeline networks is investigated.Basic partial differential equations based on one-dimensional homogenous flow model are formulated and solved by the method of characteristics. The differential equations of momentum and continuity are developed for solving transient problem. For transient condition caused by pump failure, four different scenarios were considered to study the impact of column separation of the pipelines system. These scenarios are the steady state condition, transient condition without protection, transient condition with air vessel as a protection and transient condition with air vessel and two surge towers as a protection. Also, the impact of changing diameter and wall thickness of pipes, changing material type and polar moment of inertia of the pump on the magnitude of the maximum pressure heads and column separation were included in the study. The Water Hammer Software "Wanda V3.30" was applied and the results were graphically presented for different relationships.
