Excerpt from An Oration, Delivered in Schenectady, N. Y. July 4th, 1821 Every civilized nation, has some day consecrated to patriotism and the deeds of heroes. Marathon and Thermopylae, Bannockburn and Boyne, Agincourt and Poictiers, the overthrow of the invincible Armada; the heights of Bunker, the plains of Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth, Yorktown; the Nile and Trafalgar, Lodi and Marengo, Badajos and Salamanca, Vittoria and St. Sebastians, Vimiera and Almeida, Leipsick and Waterloo, are all held in high and glorious remembrance. But that day which above every other, except the hallowed day of God, calls forth the gratitude, and inspires the zeal, and nerves the arm, and fortifies the resolution of the patriot, is the anniversary which we have now met to commemorate. The 4th of July, 1776, is the proudest period in the annals of human liberty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Oration, Delivered at Huntington, New-York: Friday, July 4th, 1862 We are to-day actors in the grandest, drama of real life; we stand upon the threshold of momentous events, and touch the garment of occurrences which are to shape the future condition of a Continent. Republican Institutions, and their chief feature, the capacity of man for self-government, are upon trial before the assembled world. To this strange political and social entanglement the American people sustain the relation of both the contending parties. A large minority on the one side have inaugurated, and are carrying on, a war against the Constitution and the Federal Union, and attempt to cover their conduct beneath the shield of a justifiable revolution; for this purpose, and with a view to disrupt the old government, they have organized rebellion into an appearance of sovereignty, and have sent forth to the world an appeal to "the last argument of kings," and a declaration of hatred for, and independence of, the institutions of the United States of America. Excerpt from An Oration, Delivered Before the Authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1842 But houses, lands, granaries, flocks, factories, warehouses, ships, banks, are only exterior possessions, -the out-works of individual ownership. When these are carried, the assault will be made upon personal security, character and life and, lastly, upon all the endearments and sanctities that cluster around the domes tic altar, - and when these are lost, humanity has nothing more to lose. Excerpt from An Oration Delivered in Lexington, July 4, 1838 It is with the utmost diffidence I attempt the performance of the duty, to which I have been called by your kindness and courtesy, and I have to regret that the partiality which selected me as your speaker, had not been directed to an abler individual. This regret, however, is diminished by the reflection that I address an enlightened, liberal, and sympathetic audience - an audience that will bear in mind it belongs not to my avocation to address public assemblies, and that will throw the mantle of charity over my faults. This day, hallowed in the recollection of every American, has been consecrated to our national independence.
