Cadence is a comprehensive examination of how formal units in European art music of the tonal era achieve closure. The book brings together the author's decades-long investigations into cadence, a compositional device that is readily experienced both by musicians and non-musicians, but one that has proven intractable to clear and precise theoretical formulation. The Chopin Preludes, Op 28, Op 45, and one without an opus number, form one of the major works of the Romantic period. The analysis of these Preludes affords the pianist an insight into the mind and genius of Chopin. Without an understanding of how the Preludes are constructed, the pianist cannot perform them according to the composer's intent. For many pianists, learning all the Preludes poses an impossible task. Memorizing note-by-note is surely the most inefficient and time-consuming methods of learning the Preludes.
