Over the last four decades, translation studies have shown dramatic progress in terms of the numbers of institutions offering it as well as the amount of research. However, many areas are still to be explored. The assessment of translations is one of them, even though researchers have devoted their efforts to the issue and developed useful instruments. Especially in Korea, where the history of translation studies is relatively short, compared to European countries, the assessment has mostly been dependent on subjectve judgment of professionals. The practice might be acceptable in deciding whether a translation is 'good' or not. However, there is a need to set up objective guidelines for assessment to fulfill educational purposes - not just to give scores but also for the purpose of learning and teaching translation. To address this need, this research project was designed to develop an error typology to assess translations from English into Korean and verify the typology's effectiveness. The main purpose of this typology is to explain problems that students might face in performing translation. To do this, an error typology focusing on language competence, especially on grammatical competence, has been developed based on previous research done on translation and Korean grammar. One hundred and fifty-three translations from four translation classes in Australia and Korea were collected to verify the effectiveness of the typology. The results have demonstrated the error typology to be useful to point out the problematic areas in translations produced by students which stemmed from insufficient competence in both working languages. In case of Korean, which was the mother tongue of student participants, the data revealed that they would benefit from further instruction in Korean grammar to prevent errors resulting from the lack of knowledge of Korean grammar as well as from the differences between Korean and English. The results and the in-depth discussion presented in this thesis might help students and teachers learn more about translation. In addition, they would be a good starting point to resolve more issues and problems in the area.

Zulawnik focuses on the broad concept of ‘controversy’ and issues pertaining to the translation of politically and historically controversial texts in East Asia. The research methodology is exemplified through a case study in the form of the author’s translation of the best-selling Japanese graphic novel (manga) Manga Kenkanryū (Hate Hallyu: The Comic) by Sharin Yamano (2005), a work that has been problematised as an attack on South Korean culture and the Korean Wave. Issues analysed and discussed in the research include translation risk, ethics, a detailed methodology for the translation of so-called controversial texts exemplified through numerous thematically divided examples from the translation of the chosen Japanese text, as well as examples from a Korean language equivalent (Manhwa Hyeomillyu – Hate Japanese Wave), and definition and contextualisation of the concept of ‘controversy’. There has been limited research in the field of translation studies, which seeks to exemplify potential pragmatic approaches for the translation of politically-charged texts, particularly in multi-modal texts such as the graphic novel.
