Excerpt from An Instrument of the Gods and Other Stories of the Sea But when I scanned my table of contents, it oc curred to me to wonder if I were playing fair with my readers in the promise of the sub-title. What constitutes a sea story? Because I was born in a gale of wind in the region of Cape Horn, because I was brought up on the quarter-deck of a sailing ship, am I at liberty to call anything I may choose to write a sea story? Hardly. Yet, on the other hand, may it not be possible that certain pieces extraneous to the sea derive a nautical aspect from the very hopelessness of my maritime preoccupation? Is it no licence that a man views the world through sailor's eyes? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Amber Gods: And Other Stories Now, when I stand in one before this glass, infiltrated with the rich tinge, don't I look like the Spirit of it just stepped out for inspection? I seem to myself like the complete incarnation of light, full, bounteous, overflowing, and I wonder at and adore anything so beautiful; and the reflection grows finer and deeper while I gaze, till I dare not do so any longer. So, without more words, I 'm a golden blonde.' You see me now: not too tall, five feet four; not slight, or I could n't have such perfect roundings, such flexible moulding. Here 's nothing of the Spiny Diana and Pallas, but Clytie or Isis speaks in such delicious curves. It don't look like flesh and blood, does it? Can you possibly imagine it will ever change? Oh! Now see the face, - not small, either; lips with no particular outline, but melting, and seeming as if they would stain yours, should you touch them. No matter about the rest, except the eyes. Do you meet such eyes often? You wouldn't open yours so, if you did. Note their color now, before the ray goes. Yellow hazel? Not a bit of it! Some folks say topaz, but they're fools. Nor sherry. There's a dark sardine base, but over it real seas of light, clear light; there isn't any positive color; and oncfe when I was angry, I caught a glimpse of them in a mirror, and they were quite white, perfectly colorless, only luminous. I looked like a fiend, and, you may be sure, recovered my temper directly, - easiest thing in the world, when you've motive enough. You see the pupil is small, and that gives more expansion and force to the irids; but sometimes in an evening, when I'm too gay, and a true damask settles in the cheek, the pupil grows larger and crowds out the light, and under these thick brown lashes, these yellow-hazel eyes of yours, they are dusky and purple and deep with flashes. Excerpt from The Flute of the Gods In romances of the aborigines of the ao-called New World there is usually presented savage man or woman modified as may be by the in uence of Euro pean mythologies in various authorized forms. But, certain people of this New World possessed at least a semi-civilization centuries before the coming of white conquerors. When man ceases to be nomadic, builds houses of stone and mortar, terrace upon terrace, walled and fortressed against the enemy, when he has fields of growing grain, textile fabrics, decorated pottery, a government that is a republic, a priesthood trained in complex ritual, a well stocked pantheon, a certain understanding of astronomy and psychic phe nomena, he may withal be called barbarian, even as was Abraham on Moriah barbaric when the altar of his god called for sacrifice of his only son. But a people of such culture could not with truth be called savage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Masque of the Gods The Masque of the Gods. The Caverns. With murmurs, vibrations, With rustlings and whispers, And voices of darkness, We breathe as of old. Through the roots of the mountains, Under beds of the rivers, We wander and deepen In silence and cold. But the language of terror, Foreboding, or promise, The mystical secrets That made us sublime, Have died in our keeping: Our speech is confusion: We mark but the empty Rotations of Time.
