"The Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation of 18 April 1999 represents the legal foundation of the state and as such contains a blue print for all state activities as well as the rights of the individual in relation to the state. This book offers an accurate and reasonably detailed introduction to Swiss constitutional law and its interrelations with public international law. The book first discusses definitions and functions of a constitution in general. It then examines the historical development, sources and interpretation of the Swiss Federal Constitution of 1999. In addition, the major constitutional principles underlying the Swiss legal system are analyzed such as the principle of the Rechtstaat, federalism, democracy and social justice. Furthermore, the book explains how the federal state is constituted and describes the federal organs, their powers and functions as well as the relationship between them. The book also places a special emphasis on the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Swiss Federal Constitution of 1999 and the protection of these rights by the Federal Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. Presenting a succinct account of Swiss constitutional law, this book will be the ideal introduction for the interested English-speaking student. In addition, anybody interested in the foundation of the Swiss legal system will find the book a useful point of entry to this fascinating field of study"--Unedited summary from book cover.

In the early 1970s, the consumption of both prescribed and non-prescribed medicines in Britain was increasing. Originally published in 1972, this book takes a look at the medicine takers and the types of medicine they take. It examines the relationship between self-medication and prescription, and describes the frequency and nature of repeat prescribing. The medicines kept in a random sample of households were counted and analysed, and data about the length of time people hoarded medicines is used as a basis for estimating the proportion of prescribed medicines that are wasted. By putting the views and habits of people as patients alongside information from their general practitioners the study illuminates the relationship between patients and doctors. In addition, variations between people in different social classes direct light on the distribution of care and the equity of services at the time

Volume 47 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the connection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with inotropic steroids, with chemokines and their involvement in a wide range of inflam matory diseases, with the subclassification and nomenclature of ul- and Uz-adrenoceptors, with Chinese traditional medicine, with drug targets in the molecular pathogenesis of asthma, with cytokines and their therapeutic application in immunosuppression and immunostimulation, with alter native medicine and with the potential use of calcium blockers in psy chiatry. These reviews and the quotations of original articles provide the reader with valuable information on several new developments in the world-wide search for new and better medicines. In 1959, when the Editor started this series of monographs, it was his intention to help disseminate informa tion on the vast and fast growing domain of drug research. Already at that time,it was not possible to follow the major individual publications in this field, and the reader was thereby provided with a tool to keep abreast of the latest developments and trends. This goal remained unchanged over the last 37 years, and I believe that the reviews in PDR are useful to the non-specialist who can obtain an overview of a particular field of drug research in a relatively short time.

One of the few studies of its kind, this political history of the Louisiana penal system from its origin to the near-present places heavy-emphasis on the development of penal policy and shows how the vicissitudes of the system have reflected the prevailing social, economic, and political views of the state as a whole. The author traces Louisiana’s doleful history of convict leasing from 1844 to 1901 and provides a close look at the machinations of the notorious Major Samuel L. James, who controlled the state penal system for more than thirty brutal years. Professor Carleton analyzes the effects of the Huey Long regime and the heel-slashings of the 1950s which brought the penitentiary the label of “America’s Worst Prison.” Finally, he traces the slow, uphill battle of those interested in better treatment and preparatory rehabilitation for state prisoners. “At its worst,” says Carleton, Louisiana’s penal system “has been a barbaric and exploitative form of state slavery. . . . At best it has been a progressive correctional institution, administered by professional penologists with little or no interference from penal reactionaries or politicians.” Politics and Punishment is a significant contribution to penal historiography and will no doubt serve as a model for similar studies in the field.
