This book introduces readers to the Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England, located in Canterbury, Kent. The cathedral is part of a World Heritage Site and serves as the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the leader of the Church of England and the symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Founded in 597, the cathedral was entirely rebuilt between 1070 and 1077. The east end of the cathedral was considerably expanded at the beginning of the 12th century and reconstructed in the Gothic style after a fire. Substantial eastward extensions were added to accommodate the influx of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral.
