One of the most worrisome images in America today is that of the teenage mother. For the African-American community, that image is especially troubling: All the problems of the welfare system seem to spotlight the black teenage mom. Elaine Bell Kaplan's affecting and insightful book dispels common perceptions of these young women. Her interviews with the women themselves, and with their mothers and grandmothers, provide a vivid picture of lives caught in the intersection of race, class, and gender. Kaplan challenges the assumption conveyed in the popular media that the African-American community condones teen pregnancy, single parenting, and reliance on welfare. This study explored adolescent girls' subjective experiences of being young mothers in school, focusing on their personal and interpersonal relationships within their social contexts. Participants included 15 young black mothers aged between 16 and 19 years from three high schools in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Conducted within a feminist social constructionist framework, the study adopted an exploratory qualitative structure. Data were collected through life histories that were analysed within a thematic narrative framework. The narratives revealed that the young mothers found motherhood challenging and overly disruptive of school. Although contexts of childcare emerged as pivotal in how young mothers balanced motherhood and schoolwork, these were also presented as characterised by notions of power and control. Because of the gendered nature of care work, the women who supported the young mothers with childcare dominated the mothering spheres. The schools were also experienced as controlled and regulated by authorities in ways that constrained the young mothers' balancing of school and parenting. Equally constraining to a number of adolescent mothers were structural challenges, for example, parenting in spaces that lacked resources. These challenges were compounded by the immense stigma attached to adolescent motherhood. The study recommended that the Department of Education work closely with all the parties concerned in ensuring that pregnant learners benefit from the policy. It is necessary that educators are encouraged to shift attitudes so that communication with adolescent mothers is improved.

The purpose of this study was to explore the educational histories and experiences of former teen mothers who have completed a post-secondary degree and to understand their challenges and successes. This study effectively served this population by expanding the diverse experience of teen mothers and their ability to defy society’s label of “teenage parent.” The study design was qualitative with the two modes, phenomenology and life history, being employed. Personal interview was the primary data collection method. The conceptual frameworks guiding the study were resilience theory and self-efficacy theory. The life stories of all five women were shared to provide a detailed perspective of their lived experiences. Four common themes emerged across the five participants: 1. Four of the five participants confirmed that their family members and friends played an instrumental role in helping them attain their college degrees; 2. There was representative thematic continuity of resilience within all of the five women’s ability to overcome many adversities; 3. Determination served as a protective factor for all of the participants in attaining their post-secondary degrees and coping with adversities; 4. All five participants possessed a desire to help other individuals. Recommendations resulting from the findings of the study included expanding the current study to include teenage fathers and a greater diversity of race ethnicity, tracking the educational data for teen mothers by educational facilities, and exploring the relationships of teen mothers and family members who provide assistance. Implications for educational leaders were also suggested.

Through an interdisciplinary lens, the purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the impact of stigmatizing discourses on Black teen-mothers' sense of themselves and how they understand their mothering in the context of social discourses. The persistence of the idea that teen mothers are ruining their life chances along with those for their children are stigmatizing discourses, which ultimately frames the lives of teen mothers as a social problem. The significance of this work emerges through the use of intersectionality as a theoretical framework and a Black feminist epistemology to contribute to the field of Black girlhood studies. Through the use of semi-structured interviews and photo elicitation we gain understanding of the social knowledge that is assessed through honest dialogue, empathetic concern, and indications of a person's honorable motives. This study explores the ways a small group of teenage mothers in the southern U.S. navigate the discourses of teenage childbearing and motherhood, how they reproduce or challenge these discourses, and how they work to resist the negative stereotyping and stigma they experience. This study seeks to challenge the broad societal perceptions of Black teenage mothers through engaging with participants' over their ideas of who they are and how they experience motherhood and their educational experiences. Critical reflection was used to juxtapose their stories with possible stereotypes held about them. Access to a group's wisdom is gained only after its members' lived experiences have been validated on their own terms (Collins, 2000). The findings of this study are presented in a format that allows each mother to stand alone in narration of her own counter-story of teenage motherhood; beginning with Kiara (Chapter 4), and then introducing Nigerria (Chapter 5), Adrian (Chapter 6) and Anissa (Chapter 7). Chapter 8 provides a discussion and highlights themes that resonated through the analysis process across all of the narratives of this study. This dissertation is ideal for school administrators, teachers, policymakers, and all those who want to find ways to make schools more hospitable places for teen mothers; its strengths are in the lives and narrative experiences of teen mothers, specifically amongst Black adolescent girls.
