AGS-787, BNL-Princeton-TRIUMF, began taking data in February 1988 on rare K decays into .pi. and non-interacting neutrals. Recent observations of B-/bar B/ mixing have sharpened the branching ratio prediction of the three generation standard model, (SM), to (approximately) 1-5 x 10−1° for .pi.+.nu./bar /nu//. The detector has 2.pi. acceptance for this decay and 4.pi. acceptance for background gammas. A very large window for viewing new physics exists between the SM value and the previous experimental limit of 1.4 x 10−7. Several other predicted rare K+ decays can be detected. The performance of the detector is described. 8 refs., 4 figs.

We present a concise review of the theoretical status of rare K →??{bar?} decays in the standard model (SM). Particular attention is thereby devoted to the recent calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the charm quark contribution of K →?+?{bar {nu}}, which removes the last relevant theoretical uncertainty from the K →?{nu}{bar {nu}} system.

It appears that using K/sup + -/ ..-->.. ..pi ... pi..° is a useful source of tagged ..pi..°'s to investigate the rare decays ..pi..° ..-->.. ee−, ..pi..° ..-->.. ..gamma gamma..approx., and ..pi..° ..-->.. ..nu.. anti ..nu ... Present accelerator intensities may be sufficient to study the first process, although a detailed experimental design may show that higher intensities are needed. Higher flux beams clearly are needed to achieve the best sensitivity to ..pi..° ..-->.. ..nu.. anti ..nu.. and ..pi..° ..-->.. ..gamma gamma..approx.
