A program of experimental and analytical research to study coaxial jet mixing was initiated. Test apparatus was designed, and a test plan was developed. The apparatus provides for an axisymmetric primary stream which simulates the exhaust of a fuel-rich rocket motor and a coaxial secondary stream of air. Both streams are contained by a constant area duct. Wide variations of composition, temperature and velocity can be systematically imposed on the primary stream, and the temperature and velocity of the secondary stream can be varied. A broad permutation of flow and composition parameters involving the primary and secondary streams has been planned. The results of the reanalysis of early single particle boron combustion data were analyzed in terms of a more sophisticated model of the combustion process. Three phases of boron combustion are identified: (1) a heatup phase marked by convective heat flux into the particle; (2) an ignition phase in which surface reactions as well as convection control particle temperature; and (3) a combustion phase where particle temperature has reached the boiling point of its oxide. Estimates of both heatup time and ignition time are in good agreement with experimental data. Preliminary results of an analysis to determine the effect of particles on the mixing of compressible streams are given in terms of jet spreading parameters for the primary and secondary streams and the particle boundary in the mixing zone. In the near field of coaxial jets, the structure of the flow field undergoes rapid changes as it evolves from the boundary layers at the nozzle exit, through a quasi-two-dimensional shear-layer region, to an axisymmetric jet flow. These rapid changes in flow structure have raised questions concerning the applicability of turbulent flow models in the near field, but few experimental results are available to test predictive techniques. In this report, the results of a series of experiments concerned with the near field of coaxial, nearly constant density, air-air jets are described. The experiments were carried out at an external stream velocity of 30.5 m/sec, and at nominal inner jet-to-outer jet velocity ratios of 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1.

The report presents the results of experimental and analytical investigations of the confined coaxial mixing of isoenergetic air streams. Both uniflowing and counterflowing secondary air streams are considered. Laminar and turbulent uniflow mixing are treated analytically. The results of experimental investigations of turbulent mixing are used to calculate the radial as well as the axial variations of eddy viscosity and the turbulent diffusion coefficient up to 25 jet diameters downstream of jet orifice. New expressions are developed to yield reliable values in regions of mixing where existing expressions become indeterminate. Special consideration is given to the case where the two streams have equal velocity. The experimental investigation of turbulent counterflow mixing shows that a toroidal shaped vortex is set up at the jet interface which gives rise to depressed static pressures. Over the range of parameters investigated, entrainment of fluid from the inner jet into the external stream takes place downstream of the vortex. (Author).
