Tracking multiple targets in an energy efficient way is an important challenge in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). While most of the prior work consider tracking multiple targets as execution of single target tracking algorithms multiple times and utilize only single parameters for efficient energy consumption, we identify multiple parameters that can influence the energy efficiency of sensors in the WSN. We observe that there are several impacting parameters that can affect the energy efficiency of the sensors in the WSN which are: the relative location of the sensor with respect to the target's motion, multiple targets tracked by the sensor, and the remaining energy in the sensor. These impacting parameters are used to decide the tracking state of the sensors and further, our observations reveal the implications of combining these parameters and we identify that the optimal energy consumption is governed by their usage in particular network conditions. Based on these observations we proceed to propose our Adaptive Multi-Target Tracking (AMTT) algorithm that can identify the local network conditions for individual sensors in distributed environment without any centralized co-ordination, and uses required combination of impacting parameters to achieve energy efficiency.

Target tracking systems, consisting of thousands of low-cost sensor nodes, have been used in many application domains such as battlefield surveillance, wildlife monitoring and border security. These applications need to meet certain real-time constraints in response to transient events, such as fast-moving targets. While the real-time performance is a major concern in these applications, it should be compatible with other important system properties such as energy consumption and accuracy. Hence, it is desirable to have the ability to exploit the tradeoffs among them. This work presents the real-time design and analysis of VigilNet, a large-scale sensor network system which tracks, detects and classifies targets in a timely and energy efficient manner. Based on a deadline partition method and theoretical derivations of each sub-deadline, we are able to make guided engineering decisions to meet the end-to-end tracking deadline. To confirm our design and obtain an empirical understanding of these tradeoffs, we invest significant efforts to perform large-scale simulations with 10,000 nodes as well as a field test with 200 XSM motes, running VigilNet. The results from both analysis and evaluation can serve as general design guidelines to build similar real-time systems.

Wireless Sensor Networks is an emerging technology enabled by the recent advances in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, that led to design tiny wireless sensor nodes characterized by small capacities of sensing, data processing and communication. To accomplish complex tasks such as target tracking, data collection and zone surveillance, these nodes need to collaborate between each others to overcome the lack of battery capacity. Since the development of the batteries hardware is very slow, the optimization effort should be inevitably focused on the software layers of the protocol stack of the nodes and their operating systems. In this thesis, we investigated the energy problem in the context of collaborative applications and proposed an approach based on node selection using predictions and data correlations, to meet the application requirements in terms of energy-efficiency and quality of data. First, we surveyed almost all the recent approaches proposed in the literature that treat the problem of energy-efficiency of prediction-based target tracking schemes, in order to extract the relevant recommendations. Next, we proposed a dynamic clustering protocol based on an enhanced version of the Distributed Kalman Filter used as a prediction algorithm, to design an energy-efficient target tracking scheme. Our proposed scheme use these predictions to anticipate the actions of the nodes and their roles to minimize their number in the tasks. Based on our findings issued from the simulation data, we generalized our approach to any data collection scheme that uses a geographic-based clustering algorithm. We formulated the problem of energy minimization under data precision constraints using a binary integer linear program to find its exact solution in the general context. We validated the model and proved some of its fundamental properties. Finally and given the complexity of the problem, we proposed and evaluated a heuristic solution consisting of a correlation-based adaptive clustering algorithm for data collection. We showed that, by relaxing some constraints of the problem, our heuristic solution achieves an acceptable level of energy-efficiency while preserving the quality of data.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are envisioned as an approach to a wide variety of monitoring applications. From environmental monitoring to military surveillance, the range of scenarios is diverse, as are the constraints on the networking problem. In most cases, these wireless systems are energy-constrained, and it is impractical or infeasible to replace or recharge the batteries. These systems must be designed with the goal of energy efficiency. In this work, we investigate energy efficient approaches for WSNs that exhibit a variety of connectivity properties. We study three categories of WSNs in particular. In the traditional view of multi-hop sensor networks, there is a large number of sensor nodes with end-to-end connectivity, and they use multi-hop communication. We also consider dense, small-scale sensor networks, in which there are only a few nodes, and communication is primarily single-hop. Lastly, we look at sparse sensor networks, known as a delay- or disruption-tolerant network (DTN). These networks lack end-to-end connectivity, and must rely on mobility to make connections to route data. With these three categories of WSNs, we consider approaches that are specifically applied to each unique scenario. For multi-hop WSNs, we use a distributed approach to Kalman filtering for target tracking. By moving the signal processing onto the local nodes, the RF communication, which typically consumes the most power, is reduced. Through simulation, we evaluate the tracking performance. For our approach to dense, small-scale networks, we exploit the fact that multi-hop communication is rarely needed. We implement a hybrid MAC/routing protocol that assumes that routing is only needed on rare occasions, thus reducing the idle listening energy consumption. For sparse DTNs, we developed a power management scheme that uses the local information available to determine a node's likelihood of delivery, which is used to decide if a node should sleep or listen/beacon. We evaluate these two categories of WSNs through simulation and some experimental work (for the small-scale case), and we show significant gains in energy efficiency over existing approaches.
