Excerpt from Elementary Latin Latin seem alive; to give the first year study a value for gen eral culture; to minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin; to prepare thoroughly for the second year work. To carry further the first two aims of the book, the number of illustrations has been nearly doubled, and a description in English is attached to each. These descriptions taken together give a general idea of the life and customs of the Romans. To minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin, the early lessons have been divided and made shorter, so that the ap proach to the subject is much more gradual in the new edition than in the old. The first ten lessons of the former edition make twenty in the new book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Elementary Latin Grammar This book is intended to be used as an introduction to Mr. Roby's Latin Grammar for Schools. Hence much has been intentionally omitted which is com monly given in Latin grammars, but which is of little or no use to the pupil who is engaged with the elements of the language. Some parts of the larger book have been reproduced with slight omissions and occasional simplifications of language, other parts have been greatly reduced, especially in the Syntax. The main purposes of its preparation have been that the pupil should have nothing to unlearn when he proceeds to his more advanced work, and that the facts of the language should be, so far as possible, explained, and not left to be a matter of memory. Excerpt from Elementary Latin Grammar The Syntax has been less abridged than the other portions of the work, because the natural connection of its several parts rendered curtailment more difficult and because it is right that all students, whatever their ultimate Object may be, should have a systematic view of the principles which regulate the construction of Latin sentences, and of the peculiar idioms of the language. Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class.
