Excerpt from The Earth Breath and Other Poems I thought, beloved, to have brought to you A gift of quietness and ease and peace, Cooling your brow as with the mystic dew Dropping from twilight trees. Homeward I go not yet; the darkness grown; Not mine the voice to still with peace divine: From the first fount the stream of quiet flows Through other hearts than mine. Yet of my night I give to you the stars, And of my sorrow here the sweetest gains, And out of hell, beyond its iron bars, My scorn of all its pains. Excerpt from Earth With Her Bars: And Other Poems I Cried, "God, set me free, break down earth bars And let my soul mount upward to the stars. Earth is too small, 'tis heaven that I would gain, Why must these bars perpetually restrain? But loose all bonds, then might I rise and go, Leaving world mists for some supernal snow Where human things to nothingness must shrink, Dropping unwanted at heavens utmost brink. God said, "To heaven, thou, whom I made for earth? Between the narrow gates of death and birth Can'st thou not spend the brief and reckoned space Without a scorn of thy fair dwelling-place? What would'st in heaven with thy poor human toys Of sense and passion, tears, regrets and joys? In heaven such are as playthings laid aside; Of these bereft hast aught to keep beside? Earth is my handiwork, I joyed therein: If thou as well it therefore were no sin. Each flowing river, laughing brook and rill Holds in its depths my pleasures echo still. The west wind sighs it and the south replies; Dawn is as wondrous now as when Eve's eyes About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Earth Poem, and Other Poems Here is a book that seems to me to have touches of the wild beauty which we have all agreed to call poetic genius. The strict craftsman will perhaps find blemishes and obscurities in the structure of these poems; but he will also find those rarities of thought and feeling that will be a delight. There is a rift of genius in this ledge of song; and genius is so rare and precious a thing that, wherever found, it should call out gratitude and not grumbling. In "An Earth Poem," Gerda Dalliba sets forth in lyric beat her passionate thoughts about man and his long eons of evolution. Here life is touched in its vaster origins and issues. In the first part ("Children of Sod") man is seen in his mere sense-hunger and earth-wrestle. In the second part ("Children of Air") man begins to wonder over life and to send his restless heart across the stars. But in the last part ("Children of Sun") man dreams of the long purpose of God and fares forth in daring ad ventures of the Spirit. It is a strange poem that voices the unceasing flux of life. Excerpt from Heaven on Earth and Other Poems In 1919 a small edition of my book, Heaven on Earth and Other Poems appeared. Since its publication I have written several poems and also made slight corrections in a few of my poems formerly published. This Second Edition Enlarged contains sixty - five of my poems and two of my prose sketches, divided into Later and Early Poems. I have had an aim and a purpose in writing poetry and prose. I wrote Heaven on Earth, Greetings From Puget Sound, The Soul of the Poet, The Blooms of Deschi, and others, for the purpose of instilling into the human soul a love for the beautiful, grand and sublime. I wrote Emblem of Freedom and Spirit of Liberty to show that a citizen of this country must be true at heart to be an American - native born or adopted. Men and women must be brave, pure and loyal. I wrote King Bacchus, The Crimson Cup, Reflections of Pete La boe, and others, to reveal evil and wrong. We have to show up and break up evil and wrong to permit the ihflowing and infilling of sunshine. I wrote Uncle Sam in Prophecy about three months before the signing of the armistice with Germany. The purpose of this poem is to show the great work that the United States has been doing and will be doing for the good of the world. In brief, all of my poems and prose sketches have an aim and a purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Earth Cry: And Other Poems The Earth Cry [Spirit and an Angel] The Spirit How blue the sky is and how sweet the air! Sister, is this a meadow where we stray? See where the blossoms break, and over there Surely a bird is singing. Yesterday I had not thought that Heaven was like this. The Angel Now was it yesterday? The Spirit I only know I have gone gently on from bliss to bliss; I am too glad for laughter; nay, I grow Silent from very peace of comforting. Yet, sometimes, like a memory of pain, A shadow of a grief, there seems to sting A vague, insistent sorrow, like a strain Of some lost melody that haunts and stays. Excerpt from Heavens and Earth: A Book of Poems Argument - Itys, nurtured by centaurs, meets and falls in love with Helen of Troy, before her marriage with Menelaus. What befell therefrom. Slowly blanch-handed Dawn, eyes half-awake, Upraised magnificent the silver urn, Heaped with white roses at the trembling lip, Flowers that bum with crystalline accord And die not ever. Like a pulsing heart Beat from within against the fire-loud verge A milky vast transparency of light Heavy with drowning stars; a swimming void Of august ether, formless as the cloud, And light made absolute. The mountains sighed, Turning in sleep. Dawn held the frozen flame An instant high above the shaggy world, Then, to the crowing of a thousand cocks, Poured out on earth the unconquerable sun! The centaurs awoke! they aroused from their beds of pine, Their long flanks hoary with dew, and their eyes, deep-drowned In the primal slumber of stones, stirred bright to the shine! And they stamped with their hooves and their gallop abased the ground! Swifter than arrowy birds in an eager sky, White-browed kings of the hills where old Titans feast, - Cheiron ordered the charge with a neighing cry, And the thousand hunters tramped like a single beast!
