The literature of this controversy respecting the Fourth Gospel has already become voluminous, especially inGer many. I do not profess to have made myself master of the whole of it; though it will be seen, that I am not un acquainted with what has been contributed by some of the most eminent scholars to its elucidation. In particular I have derived great assistance from the learned researches of Hilgenfeld on the Paschal question. But what I wished, without attempting to compare and combine the divergent theories of others, was to examine anew for myself the ancient testimonies on which they have founded them; in order to arrive, if possible, from personal investigation, at an in dependent conclusion. While engaged in this inquiry, I was unwilling to distract my attention by taking into view the bearing of contemporary researches in the same field; and this must plead my excuse for omitting to notice some works which have recently appeared, both in this country and on the continent, by men whose names entitle what ever they write to respectful consideration.
