The researcher's purpose was to illustrate and compare attitudes early in the school year after the student's transition from middle school to high school. Specifically, the researcher addressed the following questions: 1) To what extent are attitudes of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who did not participate in transition activities? 2) To what extent are attitudes of parents of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities similar to those of ninth grade students who participated in transition activities? Various events were planned throughout the eighth grade year to prepare the students for high school. A Parent Night at the middle school, a Curriculum Fair, a Freshman Showcase, and a Freshman Orientation are described. In addition, a Freshman Seminar class designed for at-risk students is outlined. The researcher examined data from a survey given to students and their parents after the transition to high school. A similar survey was administered to students who did not experience any transition activities prior to ninth grade. After assessment of the student responses, the researcher concluded that while transition activities are beneficial for the majority of students, there was no statistical significance in attitudes and perception between the Treatment Group and the Control Group.

The current study sought to understand the stress of the eighth grade to high school transition at the International School Bangkok (ISB) and make recommendations for improving this experience. Transitioning from middle school to high school is one of the most stressful events in an adolescent's life due to physiological and social-emotional changes they experience at this time. Twelve students from the American, Thai, Japanese, and Korean communities were followed for their first three high school semesters to understand the difficulties of the middle school to high school transition. These students, along with four counselors at the school, were my Co-Practitioner-Researchers (CPR), and through their experiences, we came to understand the struggles involved in this transition at the ISB. Collection of data in participatory action research (PAR) Cycle 1 was through a transition survey and CPR drawings of the most stressful aspect of the transition, which I clarified in an interview. In PAR Cycle 2, CPR members photographed the most stressful part of the transition, then reaching consensus themes as a group. Students kept a weekly diary of time usage. In PAR Cycle 3, the CPR team completed a survey of the stress of the tenth-grade transition. Interviews with students and counselors were analyzed. Finally, a community learning exchange (CLE) was conducted at the end of Cycle 3 to present the study findings to ISB colleagues. At the CLE, I collected data through Journey Lines and interviews from staff on student stress of the tenth-grade transition. Data analysis indicated that academic stress, time management, social pressures, and student-teacher relationships were the emerging themes in PAR Cycle 1. The same themes, along with internal pressure were evident in PAR Cycle 2. In PAR Cycle 3, university planning, time management, academic grades, and after-school activities, were their primary stressors. The findings of this study provide meaningful information about student stress involved in transitioning from middle school to high school in international schools and offers advice on how to improve this transition.

This case study addressed student academic intrinsic motivation during transition into middle school. The study examined one middle school that conducts a middle school transition program. The study collected data about student intrinsic motivation in reading, math, social studies, and science. The researcher explored procedures learned during the middle school transition program that students and teachers felt most directly impacted student intrinsic motivation. -- This study was an extension of Sealy’s (2012) dissertation about high school transition. The purpose of this study was to extend the generalization of the original study, build on previous research, and add related knowledge to the original study. This study contained both population and context-driven extensions and method and measurement-driven extensions. The research design remained the same as the original study. -- A mixed-methods design was used involving quantitative data from the Children’s Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and examination of a transition graph. Qualitative data were collected from student focus groups, teacher interviews, and an administrator interview. Through analysis of data collected, student intrinsic motivation in core courses and general orientation to learning were examined. -- For the study middle school, students showed the highest levels of intrinsic motivation in social studies partially because of challenging assignments. Math also had high academic intrinsic motivation levels. Reading had the lowest academic intrinsic motivation. Students did not find reading challenging and appeared oversaturated with reading at the elementary school level. One important factor for intrinsic motivation to learn subjects was the teacher. -- When compared to the replicated study, middle school students showed more intrinsic motivation than high school students.

Every school year, many U.S. students prepare to make the transition from being a middle school student to becoming a high school student. School transitions happen regularly and can be considered predictable. As students transition to high school, there are more challenges such as school work and peer influence. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of students who participate in a transition program as they transition from middle school to high school. Also, this study explored the perceptions of teachers who participated in the transition programs. The population of this study consisted of students who were enrolled in a rural school district, which has a total student population of 500, in South Carolina who have participated in a transition program. The sample of this study was purposeful sampling of eight students who have participated in a transition program, as well as a purposeful sample of five staff who have worked with students in the transition program. An overall conclusion of the findings revealed the students enjoyed the transition program as it provided additional resources for students and access to additional clubs that provided structure and the ability to develop connections with peers. The staff found the transitional program beneficial to all students to help improve student success. Recommendations for future research include conducting all interviews in person, interviewing students and staff who have not participated in the transition program, and interviewing principals and superintendents. Program directors' should develop a curriculum plan that students will follow and schools should seek funding to assist with proving transportation to students to attend the transitional program.

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of ninth-grade students and their teachers and parents/guardians with regard to the transition from middle school to high school. A mixed-method approach with both qualitative and quantitative measures assessed attitudes toward this transition. Student focus groups were also conducted toward this end. Parents and school staff were surveyed to gain insight into the problems associated with the student transition. Data gathered from students, parents, and school faculty were also analyzed to facilitate the design of a school-transition program for the local high school serving as the study site in this research. The findings support research that has indicated academic and social problems confronted by students transitioning into high school. All three study groups agree that developing a program to effectuate early adjustment by students and parents to this transition will "pave the way" toward ultimate student success.
