Lower unregulated trucking charges, as well as flexibility, often permit the elevator operators to bid more for a farmer's grain. Distance from the farms to the country elevators is no longer a factor of great importance. Farmers truck their grain farther, often for a few cents more on the price for a bushel of grain. Country elevator operators, before the rail rate reductions in 1958, began trucking grain to compete more effectively with their rivals.
