Excerpt from American Telephone Practice The intended Scope of this book is set forth in its title. To those interested the writer has endeavored to present in as clear a manner as possible the general principles of telephony, the design and construction of commercial apparatus, the circuits connecting such apparatus into operative systems, and the methods used in the construction, operation, and maintenance of these systems. No attempt whatever has been made to treat the subject from its purely mathematical standpoint, that being beyond the scope of this work. The apparatus and methods of both Bell and Independent companies have been given impartial attention. The writer sincerely thanks his friends, Mr. Wm. H. Donner and Mr. Wm. R. Mackrille, for their many suggestions and untiring labor in proof reading, and also Mr. W. D. Weaver, editor of the Electrical World and Engineer, for his interest and assistance throughout the entire preparation of this book. Excerpt from The Telephone Hand-Book This little book has no pretension to be considered a complete treatise on telephony as it exists in America. The time for such a work is not yet come. But it is felt that there is a demand for a practical book on telephone working and management, and The Telephone Hand-Book is an attempt at meeting that demand. With the exception of a few chapters dealing with certain forms of transmitters and receivers used in Europe, which are given for the information of those who are unfamiliar with other types of instruments than those used in this country, the book is based entirely on standard American practice; and most of the material, apparatus and methods described are peculiar to or have originated in this country. With the illustrations no time nor trouble has been spared to make them clear and intelligible, and of real service to the reader. The great majority of them have been executed especially for the book; quite a number have never been published before, others have appeared in the Electrical Engineer and Electrical Review, generally in connection with my own articles. These latter have been re-drawn from the original material wherever possible. As this is the first practical book on American telephone methods, sins of commission and omission will no doubt be met with in its pages. Any suggestions or corrections, which may be addressed to the care of the publishers, will be received in a spirit of due modesty and thankfulness. Excerpt from Toll Telephone Practice: With an Introductory Chapter by Frank F. Fowle, S. B., 273 Illustrations At the opening of the third decade, about 1895, the fundamental patents were expiring and the field was thrown open to competition. That phase of the commercial development which really commands amazement began at this time and the succeeding yearly expansion increased at a rate not anticipated even by the most optimistic fore casts. The rate of growth at the present time appears to be unchecked and a state of development approaching saturation is unquestionably beyond the immediate future.
