This publication demonstrates Bedford County?s involvement in the American Revolutionary War. Bedford County was the ?mother? of present-day Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset Counties. This book has a three-fold purpose. The first is to provide a history of the Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; The Blair County Chapter encompasses the region that includes Bedford, Blair, Fulton and Huntingdon Counties, Pennsylvania. In addition to the general history of the chapter, all members of the Blair County Chapter, past and present, are listed with genealogical information tracing their lineage back to all their proven Patriot ancestors. The second purpose is to provide a history of the Somerset-Cambria Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. As its name implies, the Somerset-Cambria Chapter includes those two counties. As in the case of the Blair County Chapter section, this section includes a general history of the chapter along with information on its members, past and present. This book will be of value to anyone with ancestors from this region who might be interested in joining the Sons of the American Revolution or Daughters of the American Revolution. Mother Bedford?contains the most extensive listing ever published of the Patriots? war service. Also included are references to the Hessians buried within the region. Written by Larry D. Smith who serves as the Historian for the Blair County Chapter and who has spent a number of years researching the subject of the American Revolutionary War, the third purpose of the volume is to provide the most complete and accurate history, to date, of Bedford County?s participation and role in the American Revolutionary War. A “solid and informative” biography of one of the overlooked heroes of the Second World War (Wall Street Journal). Of the leaders of the American Army in World War II, Jacob Devers is undoubtedly the “forgotten four-star.” Plucked from relative obscurity in the Canal Zone, Devers was one of four generals selected by General of the Army George Marshall in 1941 to assist him in preparing the Army for war. He quickly became known in Army circles for his “can do” attitude and remarkable ability to cut through red tape. Among other duties, he was instrumental in transforming Ft. Bragg, then a small Army post, into a major training facility. As head of the armored force, Devers contributed to the development of a faster, more heavily armored tank, equipped with a higher velocity gun that could stand up to the more powerful German tanks, and helped to turn American armor into an effective fighting force. In spring 1943, Devers replaced Dwight Eisenhower as commander of the European Theater of Operations, then was given command of the 6th Army Group that invaded the south of France and fought its way through France and Germany to the Austrian border. In the European campaign to defeat Hitler, Eisenhower had three subordinate army group commanders: British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, Omar S. Bradley, and Jacob Devers. The first two are well-known; here the third receives the attention he properly deserves.

Helms Hall of Fame's brothers William M. and Andrew B.
