Excerpt from American Catholics and the Roman Question The following pages are an expansion Of an article published by me on the same subject in the American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1892. Certain qualified judges, whose desire was for me a command, having urged me to publish it separately, I felt it my duty to somewhat enlarge its scope and reinforce its argument. It is unnecessary to say that I have by no means either the intention or the pretension of exhausting such a subject in so few pages. I have proposed to myself primarily to Show clearly and frankly the Catholic point of View from which the Roman question should be regarded, indicating the principal considerations which should be taken into account in a true conception and solution of it, and thus to disengage it from those prejudices and ambiguities with which the best intentioned people sometimes surround it. Excerpt from America or Rome, Christ or the Pope Universal the all-absorbing problem with which the age confronts her. At the Baltimore Catholic Congress, Henry F. Brownson, LL.D., said: The American system is also anti-protestant, and must either reject Protestantism, or be overthrown by it. At the dedication of the Roman Catholic Uni versity at Washington, Father Fidelis asserted: Either the Catholic Church is God's agency set in operation and maintained by Him for the salva tion of mankind, or else there is no hope from God. Protestantism has had its day, and is pass ing, as all human systems of philosophy or religion must surely pass. The 1960 publication of We Hold These Truths marked a significant event in the history of modern American thought. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Excerpt from The Catholic Question in America: Whether a Roman Catholic Clergyman Be in Any Case Compellable to Disclose the Secrets of Auriecular Confession; Decided at the Court of General Sessions, in the City of New York The general satisfaction given to every religious denominations, by the decision of this interesting question, is well calculated to dissipate antiquated prejudices, and religious jealousies, and the Reported feels no common satisfaction in making it public. When this adjudication shall be compared with the baneful statues and judgments in Europe, upon similar subjects, the superior equity and wisdom of American jurisprudence and civil probity will be felt, and it cannot fail to be well received by the enlightened and virtuous of every community, and will constitute a document of history, precious and instructive to the present and future generations. Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools The address upon The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, which has the first place in the following pages, was delivered in connection with the now somewhat famous text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888, and was published at that time in pamphlet form. The address upon the question, Has the Parochial School Proper Place in America? Was given before the National Educational Association, at Nashville, in July last. The writer declined the invitations for its publication at the time, as it was his desire to expand and strengthen that portion of the address devoted to the subject of moral training in the public schools. The leisure for this revision has never come, and the address is given here almost untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
