The genesis of the alliterations in this book was an email exchange in 2001 with a colleague in Albany, New York. In the emails, we traded alliterations back and forth, variously signing our emails Phrantic in Philadelphia, Accommodating in Albany, Perplexed in Philadelphia and finally, Alliterative in Albany. This email exchange was ultimately the inspiration for my first alliteration about the city of Albany. I then set myself the challenge of exploring the alliterative possibilities of each letter of the alphabet and this slim volume of alliterative verse, Alliteration, Again and Again, is the culmination of that endeavor. My earnest hope is that this work will not be dismissed as: Alliteration, an author affliction and awful addiction, avoiding any actual artistic achievement.!

Robert Browning (1812-89) rivals Tennyson as the major Victorian poet with such important works as Dramatic Lyrics, Dramatic Romances and Lyrics, Men and Women, Dramatic Personae and the monumental The Ring and the Book. He is known for his development of the dramatic monologue in which he recreated the world of Renaissance Italy, and provided subtle and complex explorations of character. Here, Daniel Karlin and John Woolford provide a thematic survey of Browning's often difficult work, using key poems as a common point of reference. The themes covered include: styles, genres, the mind, the world, interaction and criticism. This excellent survey will be of value to students of Victorian literature and modernism.

When a chance meeting with a local publisher outside a small bookshop results in all three of her manuscripts being signed, Ruby Wright thinks she has it made. Already she sees images of herself wearing dark glasses, being mobbed by fans clamouring for her latest blockbuster... Little does Ruby know, but her ditsy publisher is a charlatan who has no more idea about publishing than Ruby does. Pretty soon Ruby is broke. She has no IT experience so depends heavily on her nerdy flatmate, Hunter, whenever her computer fails her. He has enough of his own issues to deal with-he is studying for his final law exams. She bribes him with a dog she found on the side of the road, then Panforte, which chips his tooth, and a couple of Axolotls until he finally gives in and helps her. But Ruby's life is filled with disaster... What follows is excitement, disappointment, heartache, love and loss as we follow Ruby's hilarious struggles to maintain her trust and focus in the ever-shifting publishing industry and in people in general.

We are fascinated by what words sound like. This fascination also drives us to search for meaning in sound - thereby contradicting the principle of the arbitrariness of the linguistic sign. Phonesthemes, onomatopoeia or rhyming compounds all share the property of carrying meaning by virtue of what they sound like, simply because language users establish an association between form and meaning. By drawing on a wide array of examples, ranging from conventionalized words and expressions to brand names and slogans, this book offers a comprehensive account of the role that sound symbolism and rhyme/alliteration plays in English, and by doing so, advocates a more relaxed view of the category 'morpheme' that is able to incorporate less regular word-formation processes.
