The Post-June Alaska Peninsula commercial salmon fishery is scheduled to occur from July 6 through September 30 in 2009. This document describes how the fishery will be managed, the requirements for industry to participate in the fishery, and how to contact and relay information to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF & G). This document is intended as a guide to the stakeholders interested in commercial salmon fisheries in the South Alaska Peninsula Management Area (Area M). Specific information regarding commercial salmon fishing should be obtained from the ADF & G prior to fishing in the area.

The Alaska Peninsula operational plans are composed of four individual reports that discuss various area-specific commercial salmon harvest and escapement sampling operations and studies, and include topics such as run reconstruction, weir operations, smolt outmigration, and the monitoring and enumeration of sockeye salmon. All reports aid ADF&G management in making decisions regarding preseason forecasts, escapement goal evaluations, and the inseason and long term management of the APMA sockeye salmon runs.

This report discusses the 2009 projected north Alaska Peninsula salmon harvest, comprised of Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, sockeye O. nerka, coho O. kisutch, pink O. gorbuscha, and chum O. keta salmon. The bulk of the salmon harvest is projected to occur in the northern district from the Nelson Lagoon section to the Outer Port Heiden section. The North Alaska Peninsula is predominantly fished by drift gillnet and set gillnet fleets, though purse seines are a legal gear type in some areas. In 2009, salmon enumerating weirs on the Nelson, Bear, Sandy, and Ilnik Rivers will be used to facilitate inseason escapement assessment.
