My brother, before you is a priceless, beneficial booklet written by Ustaz Haidar Ali Qalamandarani al-Qummi, which is an exposition of two important topics which are Imamah or Khilafa (leadership or authority or successorship to the Messenger of Allah-S.A.W) and infallibility of Imams (leaders). My noble brother, surely Islamic unity is a persistently sought goal at this stage of the life of the Islamic community. Surely the greatest path to Islamic unity is that each Muslim shall study what he possessed of legacies and thoughts with the eye of seeker of the truth. It shall not concern him whether the truth emanate from his tongue (or source) or that of someone else. He shall explore, question and sieve whatever he come across of narrations (hadith and history), making the Qur'an and sound hadiths as his aspiration, desire, purpose and intent; the major goal is seeking for the truth. This booklet is a blessed step towards the Islamic unity we desire. My honored brother we are inviting you (to the true teachings of Islam) through the efforts of Ustaz Haidar Ali Qalmandarani and other people who are inviting to religious reformation, rectitude and unity of the Islamic community, especially Ayatullah Sayyid Abul Fadl bin Rada al-Borqei, may Allah have mercy on him. These are men who are warning from the call to disunity and planting of hatred and dislike between Muslims and shunning all aspects of disagreement and disunity. This booklet written by the big teacher Haidar al-Qummi though small in size; I wish you to live its pages with the sole intention of seeking for the truth and guidance. We decided to publish this small booklet in size but great with regard to its contents, strong in its proofs and beautiful in its style in the hope of attaining Allah's Grace, Exalted be He in the first instance and then secondly, in the hope of uniting the word of the Muslims before the truth and guidance. The struggle for political legitimacy in many Middle Eastern countries today poses a dilemma for ruling elites. In order to maintain authority, leaders often must capitulate to Islamic universalist dogma, which may conflict with their own views of the state as well as threaten the legitimacy of other leaders in the region who are attempting to establish a secular, national basis for government. Tracing the roots of this dilemma in Middle Eastern history and Islamic philosophy, Dr. Sonn compares the contemporary Middle Eastern period to Europe’s “Age of Religious Wars†that preceded the emergence of the Western secular state. She describes how a process similar to the organic development of the secular state in Europe was interrupted in the Middle East by oppressive Western colonialism, which eventually led to the Muslim rejection of nationalism and all things “Western†and to the reassertion of Islam as the sole source of political legitimacy. The author shows how the philosophy of Islamic traditionalism opposes the two fundamentals of stable national political systems—a geographical limitation of authority and an institutionalized process for regular changes in leadership. Dr. Sonn bases her argument on an insightful examination of Middle Eastern history, from the formation and disintegration of the Ottoman Empire in the late nineteenth century to the present, and caps it with a detailed look at a possible solution to the dilemma: the teachings of modern scholars who advocate a new “Islamic realism†incorporating a limited definition of national identity and interests while retaining Islamic social goals.
