This study represents the latest in a series of research activities aimed at a better understanding of the origin and fate of air pollution within the built environment. Most previous studies of air pollution in cultural institutions have focused on gases. Particles were ignored for many reasons: they seemed to be more easily removed by the building; gaseous air pollutants had been well studied by industry, and their effects on commercial products were heavily documented; and many particle types were considered chemically benign to almost all surfaces. Even carbon black, which is now known to pose enormous degradation risks to the optical and color qualities of paintings and tapestries, is almost totally inert. Recognizing this, and understanding that we needed to know much more about the physics of particle intrusion in museum buildings, in 1987 the Environmental Engineering Lab at the California Institute of Technology, under contract to the Getty Conservation Institute, began a detailed examination of five different museums in Southern California. These structures represent a diverse range of architectural and ventilation types. Through this study a powerful computer model was developed that could predict the soiling effects of changes made to the operation or maintenance of a building. This model can even be used to estimate the soiling rates of new buildings or major rehabilitations before any construction work is begun. This is an important contribution to both the conservation community and the broader field of air quality science.

With an emphasis on passive sampling, this volume focuses on the environmental monitoring for common gaseous pollutants. It offers an overview of the history and nature of pollutants of concern to museums and the challenges facing scientists, conservators, and managers seeking to develop target pollutant guidelines to protect cultural property.

The explosion of global warming and climate change occurs parallel to the rise of earth development. This is due to the deterioration of atmospheric environment that roots from man-made sources. Ranges of air pollutants had been discovered. However, this research focuses on Particulates Matter (PM) in particular, source from transportation. The Particulate Matter is a complex mixture of extremely small solids and liquid particles suspended in air. This complex mixture contains a number of components, including acidic and organic chemicals, and soot, smoke, pollen, and dust particles. It comes in many particle sizes of ranges, coarse particles, which known as Inhalable Particulates (PM10) and fine particles as Respirable Particulates (PM2.5). Studies have been carried out on specimens of airborne particulates in National Textile Museum, Kuala Lumpur. The objective is to investigate the main sources of suspended airborne particulates in the air of the outdoor museum, indoor and showcase atmospheric in determining the risk level of artefact deterioration. The analysis was done to compare the mass concentration, size distribution, physical characterisation of airborne particulates indoor and outdoor of the museum. The evidence is believed that the fine particles provide higher degrees of illness than coarse particles. The fine particles from outdoor atmospheric can deposit into deeper part of museum showcases and apart from the size of the particles, other specific physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that include the presence of metals, other organic components, or certain toxins provide adverse negative effect towards the artefacts in the museum and also brings influence harmful health effects to worker and visitor.

This collection includes thirty-six important recent works on the effects of pollutants on heritage sites, including thirty papers delivered to the Seville International Workshop on Air Pollution and Cultural Heritage in 2003, and six invited new additions. All papers have been written by a team of leading international contributors and are divided into five subject areas to cover the main topics of interest today. This volume is aimed at archaeologists and molecular biologists as well as advanced students and researchers in the fields of biodeterioration, building materials, micro-organisms and cultural heritage.
