Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 25: July 1937 Net worth per farm family averages almost twice that of all u.s. Families (9, p. 161) because farm families save and reinvest a large proportion of their income in the farm business. Also, farm families have benefited greatly from capital gains on farm real estate. Thus, net worth should be considered along with income when discussing the economic situation of farm families. Why are both income and net worth important when considering the economic situation of people? Because money income alone understates the true economic situation. Two individuals with low money incomes, one having substantial net worth and the other having little, would be economically dissimilar. Yet, in most income statistics, the two would be considered together. A new concept called economic well-being, which takes account of both income and wealth, is used in this study. The purpose is to determine the effect of net worth on the level and distribution of economic well-being among farm families. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 25: January 1973 A few economists have been charged with bringing economics down to the level of comprehension of the common man and making the subject interesting. For example, some professional eyebrows may have risen to all-time highs at Samuelson 's statement in the preface to the seventh edition of his Economics that: No effort is spared to help you understand and enjoy economics. Each chapter is carefully planned. Each has a comprehensive summary. Color has been planned, behind the scenes, for optimal learning. Key definitions are indented in brown for emphasis and new concepts in figures and tables usually appear in green to alert the reader. Samuelson 's attention to these details and the general quality of his writing made his book one of the most widely used college texts in economics and did not prevent him from receiving a Nobel award. Despite the reputation of fostering a dismal science, the writings of the early classical economists were often entertaining. No one who has read Adam Smith's description of the operations in a pin factory can deny its compelling and effective style. Thomas Malthus has been much maligned but there is no doubt that his writing attracted attention. Consider the following brief passages from three current economists. Each sets a stage for your attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 4: A Journal of Economic and Statistical Research in the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and Cooperating Agencies; July, 1952 In formulating the forecast of general eco nomic activity, we focus attention on two main questions. First, what is the anticipated level of consumers' disposable income in the United States? We use this measurement because it has proved to be the best over-all indicator of the demand for agricultural products consumed domestically. Second, what is the anticipated level of exports from the United States, par ticularly exports of farm products?
