The Siddur marks the culmination of years of rabbinic scholarship, exemplifies ¿s tradition of textual accuracy and intuitive graphic design, and offers an illuminating translation, introduction and commentary by one of the world¿s leading Jewish thinkers, Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks. Halakhic guides to daily, Shabbat, and holiday prayers supplement the traditional text. Prayers for the State of Israel, its soldiers, and national holidays, for the American government, upon the birth of a daughter and more reinforce the Siddur¿s contemporary relevance. A special Canadian Edition is the first to include prayers for the Canadian government within the body of the text.

The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

Authored by Rabbi Yehudah Ben Lewi, our Friday Night Siddur and complete Shabbath Siddur are monumental projects in the history of West African Jewry. The legacies of Rabbi Ford, Rabbi W.A. Matthew, Rabbi Haiyim White, Rabbi Tate, Rabbi Levi benLevi, Rabbi Eliezer Brooks and others of blessed memory are highlighted. Our siddurim document many of the rich and exclusive traditions passed down by our great Rabbanan and elders, which are consistent with halakhic authority. The West African Jews of the Diaspora are proud to announce our very first Friday Night Siddur. This siddur marks the first of many other works pending on the horizon. What makes this siddur unique is that we are celebrating our rich history and geological foot prints as Jews, leading up to our heritage in the American diaspora (the legacies of F.S. Cherry, Williams Saunders Crowdy, Rabbi Ford, WA Matthew, Haiyim White, Rabbi Tate, Rabbi Levi benLevi, Rabbi Eliezer Brooks and others of blessed memory). This siddur has a format that is not found in any other siddurim thus far, having a linear Hebrew, with English transliteration (phonetically written according to our traditions) and an English translation on the same page. This siddur has documented some of our rich and exclusive traditions that have been passed down by our great rabbanan and elders, which are supported by halakhic sources. Because of the format, our siddur is user friendly for anyone. It doesn't matter which level of Hebrew reading or comprehension a person may find themselves. We pray that each individual will experience the rich and wonderful benefits of prayer and learning, when using our siddur.
