Carcassonne, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Barcelona & the Basque Country. The medieval fortified town of Carcassonne alone is one of the most visited cities in France. There are ski resorts and spas throughout this area, as well as innumerable historic sites and monuments. Coverage extends from Languedoc-Rouissillon and Aquitaine in France to Spanish Catelonia, Aragon and Navarre. Ancient cathedrals abound and the church in the tiny village of Rennes le Chateau is thought to have been visited by Mary Magdalene and to be where the Holy Grail is hidden. By contrast, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is one of the most unusual churches in the world, with its melting sand-castle appearance and odd bubble-shaped spires.

This book describes an epic 52 day and 950 kilometre walk, which was the authors retirement odyssey, from where the Pyrenees mountains, that separate Spain from France, emerge from the stormy Bay of Biscay to where they disappear into the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Much of the way was through wonderfully pristine wilderness country where few people were met or even seen. He was joined on the walk by Clodagh who later become his wife. The book describes the walk on a day to day basis in terms of the route, the scenery and fauna seen, villages passed through and villagers met, problems that occurred and how they were overcome especially when deep late snows unexpectedly blocked the original intended route, the food and wine enjoyed when camping and in villages en route. Much of the route followed the GR11 and GR15 long distant paths when weather allowed. The walk turned out to be natures quiet alternative to the busy walk to Santiago de Campostella.
