Jack Carpenter, pioneer of accelerator-based pulsed spallation neutron sources, talks about neutron science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and a need for a second target station at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). ORNL is the Department of Energy's largest multiprogram science and energy laboratory, and is home to two scientific user facilities serving the neutron science research community: the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and SNS. HFIR and SNS provide researchers with unmatched capabilities for understanding the structure and properties of materials, macromolecular and biological systems, and the fundamental physics of the neutron. Neutrons provide a window through which to view materials at a microscopic level that allow researchers to develop better materials and better products. Neutrons enable us to understand materials we use in everyday life. Carpenter explains the need for another station to produce long wavelength neutrons, or cold neutrons, to answer questions that are addressed only with cold neutrons. The second target station is optimized for that purpose. Modern technology depends more and more upon intimate atomic knowledge of materials, and neutrons are an ideal probe.

Download The US Advanced Neutron Source Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) is to be a new user experimental facility for all fields of neutron research. The most important scientific justification for the ANS Project is to provide intense beams of neutrons for scattering and other experiments: neutron scattering is a primary tool of basic and applied materials science. Facilities will also be provided for engineering materials irradiation tests, isotope production (including transplutonium elements), and materials analysis. More than 1000 users per year are expected to carry out experiments at the ANS facility. Details of this facility and its uses are discussed in this paper. 4 refs., 8 figs., 5 tabs.

Download Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons At Pulsed Neutron Sources Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The applications of the use of cold neutrons for condensed matter research at accelerator-based spallation sources are less well-known than that of the use of cold neutrons at reactor sources. This book represents the outcome of the first international workshop on “Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons at Pulsed Sources”. It consists of overviews of the present status and future trends in research opportunities using cold neutrons, as well as topical papers focusing on the areas of small-angle neutron scattering, reflectivity and spectroscopic studies of a rich variety of materials, from adsorbed molecules to thin films to coal to metallic glasses. These papers will benefit researchers who are interested in the characterization of microscopic properties of advanced materials.
