Following the first international symposium ever held in Asia on Advances in Understanding Aortic Diseases (AUAD), this volume of proceedings contains the papers presented in both the oral and poster sessions. The 8th AUAD symposium greatly contributed to the understanding of aortic diseases, especially in Asia. Aortic diseases, specifically thoracic aortic diseases, are more common in Japan than in Western countries, which adds further importance to this compilation that covers recent improvements and advances in thoracic aortic surgery and its outcomes. Divided into lectures, panel discussions, symposiums, and poster sessions, the book includes, among other topics, advances in imaging and diagnosis with 3D-CT, MRS, and US; state-of-the-art repair of the thoracic aorta; novel aspects of aortic root replacement; reconstruction; and prosthetic graft surgery. This valuable collection of work provides the reader with an increased knowledge and understanding of aortic diseases not only in Japan but worldwide.

This book is driven by the considerable progress made by novel imaging techniques in understanding the pathophysiology and evolution of aortic disease and its diagnosis. Despite the lack of symptoms in stable conditions, most aortic diseases have a high morbidity and mortality. New therapeutic strategies such as endovascular treatment and surgical techniques have appeared to improve conventional surgery in advanced phases of the disease, but until recently, medical treatment has focused on the control of cardiovascular risk factors using beta-blockers to reduce aortic wall stress by reducing blood pressure and heart rate. Pharmacotherapy in Aortic Disease updates the reader on the new medical treatment that are changing the natural history of these diseases. Leading experts have created a critical in-depth, yet concise, analysis of the available medical treatments for different aortic disease entities. Both basic research studies and clinical trials discussed in this book serve as a base for improving therapeutic management, delaying the need for surgery, and prolonging survival in these patients.

This book is an up-to-date summary of all aspects of aortic disease, written by international experts in their fields, covering diagnostic concepts of all aortic diseases, the most modern therapeutic approaches in various aortic syndromes, the pathogenic origin and the most recent molecular and cellular findings that have revolutionized our present knowledge of aortic diseases. The reader will come to understand the aorta as a functional organ with a complex regulatory system rather than just a major arterial vessel, and will have a better understanding of the prognostic impact of various aortic syndromes, and of the most recent therapeutic concepts for chronic as well as acute aortic pathology. As a unique feature of this book, the aorta is placed in the center of systemic illnesses, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, infectious diseases and connective tissue disorders, storage diseases, trauma and toxic factors; this concept aims to attract the attention of both clinical specialties such as cardiology, radiology and cardiovascular surgery and adjacent areas like pathology and clinical genetics. The book portrays the aorta as an integral part of the cardiovascular system and the entire organism and features the complexity and clinical impact of all major aortic diseases.

An increase in aortic aneurysm occurrence is registered, despite considerable advances in surgical interventions. Consequently, numerous researchers have been trying to improve the understanding the aortic aneurysm pathogenesis in order to facilitate an early diagnosis, to identify new therapeutic targets, and to develop complex therapies. Within this book, the reader may find interesting data about etiology, risk factors, and pathogenesis of aortic aneurysm, its characteristics in young age, particularities of aneurysms affecting visceral arteries, the preoperative evaluation of the patients, different perspectives regarding the surgical therapy, including the treatment of complications after prior surgery, original proposals regarding new therapeutic modalities, and advanced imaging strategies. The multidisciplinary team of authors provides an interesting lecture and an update of the scientific literature.

Type A acute aortic dissection (TAAAD) is an acute cardiovascular condition that is normally associated with genetic conditions such as Marfan Syndrome, but it can also occur in patients with no known predisposing risk factors. TAAD is associated with extremely high mortality (over 20% of documented cases in medical literature) if not addressed on time. Surgical management of TAAAD also varies tremendously depending on the causative pathology. Techniques to manage TAAAD cover the entire spectrum of methods employed in cardiac surgery ranging from a simple replacement of the ascending aorta to aortic root sparing or replacement, and an aortocoronary bypass to total arch and descending aortic stenting involving hypothermic circulatory arrest or other cerebral protection strategies. New medical evidence suggests that concomitant, intraoperative management of the arch and descending aorta minimizes the need for subsequent surgeries in patients who are operated upon for TAAAD. Coupled with new diagnostic technology available to medical professionals, better long-term patient outcomes for TAAD treatment are now a reality. Recent Advances in Acute Type A Aortic Dissection presents a collection of comprehensive reviews from many experts on TAAAD. Cardiac surgeons can benefit from this volume by learning about current medical opinions and consensuses on risk factors (including genetic predisposition), diagnostic modalities, intraoperative management, surgical options, cerebral protection strategies, and long-term follow up procedures on acute TAAAD.

This book describes the different aspects of aortic valve and root diseases including comprehensive discussion of the state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging options, disease risk stratification, selection of candidates for valve repair or percutaneous intervention, and most recent therapeutic options. The growing prevalence of valvular heart disease represents a major challenge in terms of short- and long-term management and surveillance. Aortic valve diseases, including aortic stenosis and regurgitation, are among the most frequent of these, while the number of cases of aortic root disease is also on the rise. Aortic valve disease treatment options include valve surgery, valve repair, minimally invasive valve surgery, and percutaneous approaches and all are covered in this volume. Advances in Treatments for Aortic Valve and Root Diseases is a highly illustrated, case oriented reference aimed at cardiology fellows in training, while also helpful to surgeons, cardiologists, imagers, interventionalists, as well as other clinicians and students involved in the diagnosis and treatment of aortic valve and root diseases.
