The research work on the topic of ‘‘Tomography of the Earth’s Crust: From Geophysical Sounding to Real-Time Monitoring’’ has focused on the development of cross-scale multiparameter methods and their technological application together with the development of innovative field techniques. Seismic wave field inversion theory, diffusion and potential methods were developed and optimized with respect to cost and benefit aspects. This volume summarizes the scientific results of nine interdisciplinary joint projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in the framework of the Research and Development Program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN. Highlights and innovations presented cover many length scales and involve targets ranging from applications in the laboratory, to ground water surveys of heterogeneous aquifer, geotechnical applications like tunnel excavation, coal mine and CO2 monitoring and the imaging and monitoring of tectonic and societally relevant objects as active faults and volcanoes. To study these objects, the authors use the full spectrum of geophysical methods (ultrasonics, seismic and seismology, electromagnetics, gravity, and airborne) in combination with new methods like seismic interferometry, diffuse wave field theory and full-wave-form inversion in 3D and partially also in 4D. Methods to eonstruet images of an objeet from "projeetions" of x-rays, ultrasound or eleetromagnetie waves have found wide applieations in eleetron mieroseopy, diagnostie medicine and radio astronomy. Projeetions are measurable quantities that are a funetiona- usually involving a line integral - of physieal properties of an objeet. Convolutional methods, or iterative algorithms to solve large systems of linear equations are used to reeonstruet the objeet. In prineiple, there is no reasan why similar image reeonstruetions ean not be made with seismie waves. In praetiee, seismic tomography meets with a number of diffieulties, and it is not until the last deeade that imaging of transmitted seismie waves has found applicatian in the Earth sciences. The most important differenee between global seismie tomography and mare eonventional applieations in the laboratory is the faet that the seismologist is eonfronted with the lack of anything resembling a well-eontrolled experimental set-up. Apart from a few nuelear tests, it is not in our power to locate or time seismie events. Apart from a few seabattom seismographs, our sensors are located on land -and even there the availability of data depends on eultural and politieal factors. Even in exploratian seismics, praetieal faetors such as the east of an experiment put strong limitations on the eompleteness of the data set.

With recent scientific advances, and bettering of computers, seismic imaging has taken monumental steps forward. Cross-correlating ambient seismic noise, for instance, is now capable of providing as much, if not more, reliable information about the subsurface than traditional tomographic imaging, which required large, easily observable signals to measure seismic wavespeeds through regions of interest. This traditional technique typically suffers from an inherent bias in places that can be imaged (due to local seismicity), and places that cannot be imaged (due to a lack of seismicity). In this thesis, I advance the processing used to extract coherent energy, and therefore information, from the ambient seismic field, rather than known large signals. Doing this provides a novel way to image a region of the crust without waiting for large signals. In bettering this methodology, I seek to provide more stable Noise Correlation Functions (NCFs) than had ever been obtained before, using as little seismic data as possible. I then use this advancement to seismically image two volcanic settings: the Yellowstone Volcanic Field, and the Sierra Negra shield volcano in the Galapagos Islands. Through this three-dimensional ambient noise tomography, I provide highresolution images of the subsurface structure at these regions. Then, to further improve depth resolution of my imaging at Yellowstone, I jointly invert the ambient noise tomographic results with teleseismic receiver function analysis. Finally, due to the temporal stability of the NCFs, I analyze and observe time-lapsed ambient noise tomographic images at Yellowstone.
