Nonlinear Spectroscopy: The approach has been to study molecular systems which exhibit unusual spectroscopic behavior, in the hope that they may lead to novel techniques for upconverting laser frequencies. Also studied are novel methods of laser spectroscopy and wavelength stabilization. Tunable Laser and Coherent Light Techniques for High Resolution Ultraviolet Spectroscopy-10 papers produced. The overall theme of this contract has been on studies of the physics and technology of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft x-ray lasers and devices. Much of the work has centered on methods for the production of core-excited metastable atoms and ions; and on the use of these atoms and ions both for new types of spectroscopy and for new types of XUV Lasers. An extensive study is made of the scattering of N2 off the flat, close-packed Ag(111) surface. Not only is the rotational population of the scattered N2, but also the alignment as described by the quadrople and hexadecapole moments of the J distribution, denoted by A(2) and sub 0 and A(4) sub 0 respectively.

Laser processing has been used in a wide variety of applications and materials such as semiconductors, superconductors, ceramics, polymers and metals. Lasers provide a controlled source of atomic and electronic excitations involving nonequilibrium phenomena that lend themselves to processing of novel materials and structures. The range of laser-solid interactions involving electronic excitation, melting and evaporation result in the formation of novel phases, selective gas excitations, surface modification and low-temperature thin-film deposition. This book from MRS focuses on the use of lasers in both the fundamental understanding and applied aspects of laser-solid and laser-gas interactions relevant to materials processing. Applications featured include thin-film transistors formed by laser-induced crystallization of amorphous silicon, diamond coatings and micromachining. Topics include: fundamentals of laser-solid interactions; fundamentals of pulsed laser ablation; pulsed laser deposition; novel applications of laser processing; laser-driven formation of nanocrystals; laser annealing; surface modification and etching; and laser-assisted chemical vapor deposition.

Two typical hybrid laser surface modification processes, i.e. electro/magnetic field aided laser process and supersonic laser deposition technology, are introduced in the book, to solve the common problems in quality control and low efficiency of the laser-only surface modification technology, high contamination and high consumption of the traditional surface modification technology. This book focuses on the principle, characteristics, special equipment, process and industrial applications of the hybrid laser surface modification processes based on the recent research results of the author’s group, and provides theoretical guidance and engineering reference for the researchers and engineers engaging in the field of surface engineering and manufacturing.
